Default Calgarypuck Prospect Ranking 2016 - Round 34

It's baaaaaaaaaaaaaack. almost like Shark Week on the Discovery Channel Calgarypuck and the Summer Prospect Ranking has become an institution for rabid Calgary hockey fans.

2013 - Sean Monahan is the top prospect (2013)

2014 - Johnny Gaudreau takes his turn (2014)

2015 - Sam Bennett come on down! (2015)

The last three years have had a prospect named first, and then make an impact right away on the NHL team. Bennett had to have surgery and mop up the OHL first, but all three were big players for the Flames right away.

Will that be the case again this year?

As per usual the vote is up to you. Some see it as most likely to play, some see it as highest ceiling, others see it as a mix of both.

Happy voting!

Poor Kanzig. The kid's status on this site has gone from 22 to 20 to 25 to 34 (assuming he wins this round). Massive drop this year for him but he's made steady progress year after year. I myself see an outside shot at the NHL if he continues to improve, but does everyone else see this as a no hope situation?

Realistically you might only get 10 players on this list become a regular in the NHL. I don't like his chances, especially in this organization.

Looking back at Cheese's spreadsheet, that 10 number might be super optimistic.

Karnaukhov. I feel he's not taken seriously due to going over to Russia, but that's fair, however I feel he has NHL potential if he were to come back and I don't think the other 3 do.

I wouldn't say no hope, but very little hope.

Kanzig could carve out an NHL career for himself, that wouldn't surprise me. I like the kid.

But look at defensemen just within the organization who can play in the NHL this year (Never mind other NHL players Treliving will bring in or Hickey + newbies)

Gio, Brodie, Dougie, Jokipakka, Engelland, Wideman, Kylington, Andersson, Wotherspoon, Kulak, Culkin.

Kanzig doesn't even have Engelland-level puck skills, and while I could see him getting a call up in the event Deryk gets injured (fill the toughness void etc) and even sticking around for a few games because he knows his role, he does not fit with the blue line the Flames are assembling.

You throw Hickey and Fox into the mix, and it doesn't look good for Keegan ever seeing much ice time at the Saddledome.

I don't think it's an issue of how many defensemen and prospects the Flames have, Kanzig is targeted for one particular role - the role currently occupied by Engelland.

He has the tools required for that role, and if he can develop his skating and puck moving to the point where they wouldn't be a liability at the NHL level, he'll get his chance, regardless of how many other (better) prospects the Flames have.

Is he a long shot? Absolutely. And it isn't going to happen in the next year or two.

But look at other 6'6" defensive prospects in the past (guys like Breen). They are given years to develop - and they take years. And most of them don't make it.

But if he does pan out one day, it's totally worth the investment. And yes, there is a chance of that happening.
