Default Calgarypuck Prospect Ranking 2016 - Round 19

It's baaaaaaaaaaaaaack. almost like Shark Week on the Discovery Channel Calgarypuck and the Summer Prospect Ranking has become an institution for rabid Calgary hockey fans.

2013 - Sean Monahan is the top prospect (2013)

2014 - Johnny Gaudreau takes his turn (2014)

2015 - Sam Bennett come on down! (2015)

The last three years have had a prospect named first, and then make an impact right away on the NHL team. Bennett had to have surgery and mop up the OHL first, but all three were big players for the Flames right away.

Will that be the case again this year?

As per usual the vote is up to you. Some see it as most likely to play, some see it as highest ceiling, others see it as a mix of both.

Happy voting!

Round 1 - Tkachuk 83% (http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthread.php?t=155575 )

Still voting for OM. I thought he was going to get in a couple of rounds ago but looks like his momentum has cooled. I see him potentially as a steady 5-6 Dman in a few years.

Culkin for the manyth time in a row. He was close two years ago and had a bad season. Same with Poirier, who went 8th. Culkin has a far higher chance of both (a) making the NHL, and (b) making an impact than anybody else left in my opinion.

Opted for Carroll - at this stage it gets tough, as you have your long shots with high upside and your likely shots with limited upside. Carroll may even get a callup this year, and he has a good game for a 3/4 line forward. Tough call between him and Hathaway for me.

Hathaway is a guy that should almost for sure see games in the NHL this season, so I think he should make the 20 on that basis alone. Sure, it will be as a 4th liner, but it is round 19 after all.

Tuulola, however, unlike others, my first time doing so. Hathaway next.

I went Hathaway as well.

Had to get what I see as upper roster potential players off the board and then you can look at likelihood and Hathaway as a contributor.

Culkin I like but he has that Sieloff injury step back.
Smith has been underwhelming.

Tuulola is interesting for sure, but he was just drafted and one development camp doesn't change the fact that he was taken in the later rounds.

finally went tuolola.

Interesting to note that 2nd rounder Hunter Smith still not in the discussion and we are approaching the 20th top prospect ranking in the organization. Are folks disappointed on this pick looking back?

Painful to see Dvorak being selected just 4 picks after the flames took Smith.

Why does he only have 4th line potential?

He put in 19 goals as a 22 AHL rookie on a team where the leading goal scorer had 20. As a 22 year old he had a better ppg in the AHL than a 22 year old Ferland.

If the Flames are going to go with forward pairing of Monahan-Gaudreau, Backlund-Frolik and Bennett-Brouwer there is a good chance that Hathaway will have some chance to play in the top-9 (Chaisson-Bouma-Ferland are the most likely guys he has to out-perform)

David Moss was a 24 year old 4th line rookie.
Glencross at age 24 finally broke through as 4th liner with the Oilers.

A couple of years later they were a solid 2/3 line with Conroy and then Morrison as their centre.

Tough call here. Big drop off here on the Ceiling-Risk-Floor matrix.

I'm almost tempted to put Falkovsky here. Human giant that put up solid counting stats in the OHL, but... 7th round previously undrafted pick. AOM showed well in the WJC until his injury as well but didn't wow me.

Hathaway's a legitimate pick at this point, unlike some here I don't think he's without question a legitimate NHL'er yet. He could just be your standard 4th line injury replacement tweener (same with Freddie Hamilton).

Went with Lindstrom here.

Top 6 potential, though slightly undersized. Very impressive hockey sense from everything I read in the full 200ft of ice. Slick playmaker. I don't think he is too much of a step down from Dube from what it sounds like.

Culkin once again. I still see him as having solid 4/5 potential. Injuries have set him back, but the next year is going to be big for him

Tuulola, just because I don't think Hathaway has any potential or trade value.

I am avoiding Hathaway and Hamilton now for their perceived low ceilings.

Went with Ollas-Mattsson because the talking heads think there is something there.

In what world does it make sense to have Tuulola before Lindstrom? Lindstrom was drafted early in the same draft only a few weeks ago, and neither has really played since?

Nobody has seen either of these guys play much or even at all.

Hathaway finally. I don't think anyone would be overrating him at this point.

We're now getting into a group that has a chance to be an NHL player, but it's going to be a difficult road for them. After Hathaway, we're looking at guys like Carroll, Culkin, Ollas Mattson, Schneider, Tuulola etc. The nice thing is, we're approaching 20, and there are still plenty of guys that I consider decent prospects. 90% of them won't make it, but all you need is 1 or 2 guys at this level to become regular NHLers.

I know Culkin has had injury problems but I feel like he's fallen too far at this point.
