Default Calgarypuck Prospect Ranking 2016 - Round 3

It's baaaaaaaaaaaaaack. almost like Shark Week on the Discovery Channel Calgarypuck and the Summer Prospect Ranking has become an institution for rabid Calgary hockey fans.

2013 - Sean Monahan is the top prospect (2013)

2014 - Johnny Gaudreau takes his turn (2014)

2015 - Sam Bennett come on down! (2015)

The last three years have had a prospect named first, and then make an impact right away on the NHL team. Bennett had to have surgery and mop up the OHL first, but all three were big players for the Flames right away.

Will that be the case again this year?

As per usual the vote is up to you. Some see it as most likely to play, some see it as highest ceiling, others see it as a mix of both.

Happy voting!

Round 1 - Tkachuk 83% (http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthread.php?t=155575 )
Round 2 - Jankowski 42% (http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthread.php?t=155585)

whoops, missed Gillies there somehow. I'd take him instead of Kylington

Went with Gillies. Guy has franchise goalie potential, even if he may have some injury concerns.

went with Gillies again, very surprised that Jankowski edged him out. Not in a judgemental way, but intrigued. Says a lot about what the kid has gotten done in the last two college seasons and his stint in the AHL last year.

Hasn't Jankowski been underwhelming at the development camp as well?

Gillies again and than Andersson. I don't take much from these rookie camps other than getting false hopes up. Having said that Tuulola has looked good but so did Harrison a few years ago.

He didn't have a great scrimmage, but most reports had him as the best player throughout the week.

Î chose Shinkaruk. I have actually seen him play in the NHL and he looked compitent. Moreover, he is young enough to have room to progress.

On another note. It looks like Gillies will probably win this round. But Next round is shaping up to be a close one!

Voted for Shinkaruk. The kid is ready for the top 6 in my opinion.

Gillies does intrigue me, but goalies are so damn unpredictable. Sure the guy can be the next franchise starter, but he can also be the next Ortio, Irving, Krahn or countless other "next great goalie".

I just can't pick a goalie. Every year, there is one that we think is going to be the next hype, but every year we get disappointed. Call me jaded I guess. I recall McElhinney and Keetley getting rated pretty good in these polls before. When was the last time we actually produced a starting goalie in our farm system who went on to play for the Flames?

The Feaster development camp was a measuring stick. The Treliving development camp just isn't ... limited ice time, mostly development with one scrimmage. Not a sample size to really alter prospect rankings in my mind.

Kylington for me. He's trending back towards the kid who was Timothy Liljegren before Timothy Liljegren.

No doubt the injury to Gillies cost him here. The injury is concerning, but if he can get over it and back on his previous trajectory he will challenge for top spot next year.

After these three I think it becomes more varied. Any of Hickey, Anderson, Kylington, Shinkaruk could go next.

Thinking this year's top 5 is going to be one to look back in a few years.

Look at top fives we've seen

2013
Monahan
Baertschi
Gaudreau
Gillies
Jankowski

at the time 4/5 were pretty unknown, Baertschi disappointed

2014
Gaudreau
Bennett
Baertschi
Poirier
Granlund

excitement on Gaudreau, Baertschi down a notch, Granlund a depth player

2015
Bennett
Poirier
Gillies
Ferland
Ortio

bottom falls off somewhat in this top 5. People pumped about Ferland's playoff performance, but Ortio coming off a rough finish to a season

so this year should/could be a better list as a 5?

Tkachuk
Jankowski (surging)
Gillies (pensive)
Kylington
Hickey / Shinkaruk?

Is that the first time the top 5 are all projected upper roster players?

Yeah, I was very surprised that Jankowski went 2nd. I have always been a supporter and I had him 3rd. I thought he might even go 4th or 5th.

Gillies again for me. Then it gets interesting.

The highest point of excitement and expectation for Irving and Krahn was the time between when they were drafted in the 1st round and when they started playing again. By the time they were 22 (Gillies age) they were already very long shots of making to the NHL never mind being stars.

Ortio was a complete bust until he turned 22 and had his redemption season,

Gillies has gotten better every year. He has a lot more in common in his development at age 22 with Matt Murray and Connor Hellebuyck and Johnathon Quick than the Flames pretenders that you mention.

Other than the hopefully fixable injury Gillies has been on the stud NHL goalie track.

maybe 2013 as well.

the other interesting thing here is that there has not been a single defenseman in the top 5 and this year we might have 2

Since I did my pick for Gillies last round, here are my guesses for Janko:
First NHL Game: 2016/2017 season.
Regular NHLer: 2017/2018 season.

Went with Hunter for basically the same rationale. If he's not ready for top 6 right away, he will be surely within a year, and has game-changing scoring ability.
(Thank you, Canucks!)
