Out of that list, John Gilmour. Awesome player. Seeing him rush the puck up the ice with intensity and poise, the thought that "this kid could be the next Mark Giordano / Kris Russell". He's not as big, strong, skilled, or talented as Gio, but he's the kind of on-ice leader and competitor that those two are.
Then Hathaway, who might get a call up next season.

But point still stands.
Also on a slight tangent, the Flames under Treliving have yet to draft (yes only 2 years thus far I know) a stay at home defenceman with limited offensive upside in the early or mid rounds. Ollas-Mattson and Bruce have been late round picks and there have been a few tryouts (Yevenko, Prolux, etc).
Quickly scanning Phoenix's draft record while Treliving was there, they didn't seem to pick any of those type of players either unless they were late round.
Perhaps that trend will continue.

Fair enough, I was just using the stats from http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/p...php?pid=130991. I didn't realize they wouldn't list everything.
Damn you hockeydb.com! Now my rant is slightly less effective!
As for the rest of your post, that is good news regarding Treliving's drafting in my opinion. There is just no need to draft or develop stay at home defensemen in today's NHL. They're not nearly as effective anymore, and they're also one of the cheapest commodities to acquire in free agency. You can get them for less cap hit than an entry level deal if you need one.

Went with Gilmour. Think he stands a better chance than a guy like Sieloff to be honest.

That's true, not sure why he was kept up longer. Could very well be the case. I'm assuming based on a weak recollection that the Flames were high on this kid. at camp last year. Your point about AHL vs overager does make me think about this. Anyways, I think he will turn out to be a Jooris situation all over again.

The Flames still had 57 guys left in camp when Carroll was sent down: http://flames.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=731903
He wasn't that late of a cut.

I know nobody is voting for Grant (myself included), but he has already played 25 gp in the NHL, which will no doubt put him ahead of almost all the remaining prospects once their careers are over.
I know we all think they have a chance to make the NHL, but history tell us something else. Perhaps Grant should be getting some votes.

Looks like a career AHLer to me. Four full years in the AHL without much success. Got a few games in the NHL but didn't impress enough for the Senators to qualify him. Nothing to see here.
You're right that most of the remaining prospects on the list won't reach 25 games in the NHL, but at least they still have the potential to be regular NHLers. That puts them ahead of a guy like Grant.

I think we've gotten to a point where the remaining choices haven't shown amazing talent, so I'm going with the most proven prospect. Hathaway.

I think you are right.
It's better to have players that can get the puck out of your own end rather stand back and wait for the other team to shoot.
It's better to have D that can generate a chance on a zone exit then one that just hucks it down the ice losing possession.
It's better to have five players then it is three playing offence when the puck is in the offensive zone.
If advanced stats tell us anything it's that there is limited room for one dimensional players. That includes offense only forwards as well as defence only D. You need three zone players now a days.
Obviously there is no clear line and some players are better at one thing then another. There is also room for special team specialists. But guys like Sieloff and Kanzig (probably) don't have the complete game necessary to fit today's NHL.

If Kanzig keeps improving at the rapid rate he's improving, I can see a place in the NHL for him even without offense. Think a bigger, stronger Matt Greene.

Maybe. I still see his upside as Hal Gill, and I don't like Hal Gill.
It is interesting that Kanzig was a third round pick, was voted in the top 20 last summer, saw good improvement last season, and yet still hasn't had much love through the first 21 rounds.
That said, he is a prospect without a game of pro yet. So I am certainly not writing him off. I just have low expectations.

If everything in your signature comes to fruition, and i can see it as a reasonable possibility (outside of Engelland), you sir, are a modern day nostradamus.

Guys like that still have value, but if Treliving is avoiding using top 60 picks on acquiring 6/7 dmen then I'm all for it.
Still better to use later round picks on this type of player, get lucky once and a while and develop your own then going out and spending big money on Cory Sarich type players (liked Sarich btw)
