Default For All Mankind

I think this Apple TV+ series deserves a thread - Season 2 starts on February 19th, and it is already renewed for a third season.

https://tv.apple.com/us/show/for-all...dbqcf11k76mkp7

Season 2 Trailer:

Spoiler!

I enjoy this show as a NASA nerd - I have been to Cape Canaveral, and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

For All Mankind presents an alternate history where Russia landed on the moon first, where Russia put the first woman on the moon, where Ted Kennedy is President after Nixon. The success of the Russians puts pressure on the US to extend the Apollo program to develop a moon base.

The scenes on the moon are visually stunning and realistic. The moon is a desolate place that I don't think I would want to visit in person.

There is a mix of real historic characters like Armstrong, Aldrin and Deke Slayton, plus a number of fictional astronauts and characters. The Russians remain mysterious and we do not see them directly at all.

The 70s setting is well done - the cars, the fashion, the music, everyone smoking.

Most of the men do not come across very well - they are selfish and ambitious. The women are ambitious too, but we see them sacrificing more often. All of the characters are dealing with some kind of sadness. The astronauts are merely human, not super-human.

I think my favorite characters are Margo Madison, Tracy Stevens and Deke Slayton. It is fun to see the Presidents speaking from the White House in private moments. Molly Cobb's husband is a hoot.

What are the Russians up to? Will the series go on to Mars? What will be the role of the young latina girl Aleida?

I was just glossing over this one but I might have to give it a shot, production value seems through the roof.

I really enjoy this show, its got it all.

Revisionist/Alternative History, solid production value, good actors, engaging story.

I highly recommend it.

Not much I can add to what Locke posted, but I agree, it's a solid pick. A good mix of fact and fiction. I'm looking forward to season 2.

It looks like Wernher Von Braun is a main character, do they ever talk about him being a nazi war criminal?

It comes up a couple of times.

But what makes his character interesting isnt just his Nazi past, he was a very different kind of guy. Very nihilist in the sense that he wasnt an ideologue.

All he wanted to do was build rockets. Admittedly he wasnt fussy about who or how they got built, and thats where you get into problem of Jewish Slave Labour, but thats all he wanted to do.

I vaguely recall, and I apologize if I get it wrong, but the real Werner van Braun once looked at the V2 rocket and lamented that 'it wasnt pointed in the right direction.'

Because the Germans wanted it to hit London and he wanted it to go to the Moon.

Nazisms contributions to scientific progress was outstanding, particularly aero space and biology, it's amazing what scientists can do when they get massive funding for crazy projects and are loosened from the chains of moral restraint.

WVB is currently part of a mural in the Space Needle celebrating it's construction. He's got a weird place in US history.

One of the only people in history to have some of the top honours from Nazi Germany and the USA.

Great show, but I think they went a bit too far, I know lows make the highs higher, but some lows are too low.

But that's about my only complaint about season 1, looking forward to season 2.

Space travel is incredibly dangerous, and stressful for those left behind on Earth. I think that is realistic.

I don’t know how they could afford all these missions though.

Sure, I'm fine with all the space stuff. It's the:

Spoiler!

That I think goes too far. It's too much IMO and tears me out of the space drama.

I really liked season 1, thanks for the recommendation!

It felt a little slow at times, and then had weird jarring leaps in other places, but overall a pretty good season. Definitely looking forward to season 2.

Watched it already and it was good. A few new characters and a big leap in terms of their advancement in space from where they actually were in 1983. Fun to see what more competition would have done to the space race.

Spoiler!
