Default Domain questions

I know there are folks here who will know this. My website domain is with A Small Orange. It’s due to expire and I’ve been getting notifications from ASO. I’ve also been getting notifications from Hover.

I paid for my domain for three years and the payment request from A Small Orange is for three years as expected. However, the Hover one is for one year, oddly.

I intend to pay for A Small Orange so do I just ignore the one from Hoover? Or could I pay the one from Hoover and not from ASO (seems odd)? Why am I getting this from Hoover?

I had an old site that no longer exists. Could that explain the Hover notification? I don’t think that’s the case.

Depends what is going on. I suspect ASO is your website host, and Hover is your DNS registrar. Hover then points to ASO. So you need to pay both. It looks like ASO is also a registrar, so you could move the domain registrar from Hover to ASO.

So pay both then.

You need to identify what role each provider is fulfilling and why each one needs a renewal. If you can transfer one of those roles to a single provider that you prefer, that's ideally the way to go unless they happen to be exorbitantly priced for whatever it is.

Just be careful - sometimes you'll get spam/phishing emails from domain companies you aren't registered with trying to get you to renew with them.

Do you want to keep this domain?

Do a domain transfer request to GoDaddy which is a more modern and popular platform so you can hold onto it. Keeping domains with small web hosts and registrars is not something I recommend.

Is the question how long does the transfer process take, or how does it work?

How long does it take?

Also, what’s the process?

Sorry I was unclear.

I absolutely hated GoDaddy and was so glad when I got around to moving all of my services off there. DreamHost has been significantly better.

Moving a domain is one thing, but moving a domain away from hosting, or moving a domain & hosting together are more involved.
