The very definition of a compiler. He can book his ticket, but he should be a tourist like the rest of us.
Absolutely nothing about any of his seasons screams he was the best amongst his peers.

No award nominations. No top 10 award finishes in any of the
major awards. His only top 10 finishes in any offensive stat (goals) are finishes in the top 4 and 6. So twice he has cracked the top 10 in goals. Never in points or assists. No 1st or 2nd team NHL all-star selections (the game itself doesn't count).
But yes, he's played a ton of games and compiled a lot of points. If he breaks Howe's record, absolutely that
accomplishment itself will be in the hall. But IMO just looking at his NHL career as a whole should not be the reason he makes it. Having said that, it is the hockey hall of fame, not NHL hall of fame. His gold medals will give him a good chance to get in.
When Kevin f'ing Lowe makes it in, Marleau will probably make it. I don't think he should, but I would say he has a good shot.
I hope he breaks the record. Howe himself would probably enjoy seeing it broken. As far as I'm concerned this is one of the "big 4" records, along with the most goals, assist and points. Seeing any of those big 4 records being broken is such a rare thing to witness. It would give the hockey community something to rally around as we try to put 2020 behind us.
