45 games shy of surpassing Gordie Howe's games played record.

I'm glad he is taking a shot at the all time record. Still a solid middle six player. Wonder where Jumbo Joe goes.

Has to be San Jose or retirement for him.

Why bother? He's not Lanny McDonald on a Cup favorite team.

GOAT!

This is great news, although I would have liked him getting the record on our 4th line

My guess is they still have a house in San Jose.
So his family can stay home, he can be with them for most of the season, he gets a shot at the GP record, and depending how the season goes he can be moved to a contender at the trade deadline.

I remember there were some clowns on CP saying that Jagr should respectfully not break the all time games played record, which I thought was ridiculous. Do people feel the same about Marleau?

Marleau has his eyes on a historic prize no doubt and I wouldn’t doubt either that he goes to a contender at the deadline for one last shot at a cup after he becomes the all time games leader. It will be tight though, still needs 45 reg season games to get the record I believe and I don’t think it’s known as of yet how many games the season will be.

Pretty sure I heard Joe was going to play in the Swiss league if he’s not playing in San Jose. He enjoyed it during the lockout, and that’s where his wife is from

Oh yes. You are right. I wonder if he is ready to call it quits in the NHL though.
I can also see him doing that till the season kick starts this year. Players from the Sharks, and other non-play-in/playoff teams have been off for quite some time now.

If there was ever a record to get an asterix beside it this would be the one IMO. Howe playing 419 games in the WHA is pretty significant.

Joe and Patrick seem to enjoy playing. You need players like that.

I don’t know why that would put an asterisk on most “NHL” games. He can still hold the record for most professional hockey games.

See also Jagr's KHL time (not that it breaks a record, but it moves his tally up).

Maybe Marleau will stick around for another 6-7 years and break that record too. Who knows?

I get that, and I know it doesn't matter, but the WHA was merged into the NHL so to me those games count.

Coming back home for Marleau. One more season to beat Howe's record. He is of that rare-type player breed, which most fans like and appreciate wherever they play. Class-act all around.
