They are still worse than the Bubble team they were last season

Jim knew he might get him, but it was dependent on the Vegas signing. When that deal went down, the Schmidt deal quickly followed.

It is surprising that Vegas could not get the same deal from Columbus or even take a 4th rounder from Columbus. It seems fortuitous that Jim Benning managed to get him for a 3rd rounder and that either Vegas did not refuse to trade him in the division or that an Eastern team did not top their offer.

Correct. And if the Canucks knew this was a sure thing late last week, it explains the lack of movement on Toffoli.
Stech's 1.7 still doesn't make sense though.

Yep, don't get me wrong. It's super lucky.

The steroid use would concern me, it looks like he has the roid chin and long term implications are severe.
The NHLs drug policy is so liberal that for someone to get caught is remarkable.

Well that's simply ridiculous.
1) Pietrangelo could have signed elsewhere
2) Another team could have offered more than a 3rd
WAY too many variables, during the free agent frenzy, to suggest anything close to a sure thing.
A possibility they had in their back pocket? Sure. But that is a very risky game.

So, your reason for that it isn't a possibility is that it was risky to focus on one thing even after that team just lost all it's key UFAs because they had tunnel vision on a trade?
Seems completely plausible to me. Failing upwards properly imo.

Not to mention Schmidt was apparently traded to the Panthers last night but the deal fell apart for whatever reason...maybe their offer was lower
I know people think its the deal of the century but 5x5.95 for a 30 year old good dman is still a lot of money/term

Didn't say it wasn't a possibility. I said your assertion that t was 'a sure thing late last week' was ridiculous

If just assuming everything is going to work out fine is working for the GM of my team, why would I do anything different? Clearly was a sure thing.

Columbus would have to want him and it looks like they didn’t.

This i definitely agree with, I could see Benning having two unrealistic plans and it fortuitously worked out for him. While other teams (Leafs for one) were moving out salary to create room, Jim went in with 6 million dollars in room and probably two crazy plans. It does not seem like he had a plan other than some miracle where he traded Loui for OEL straight up or this inside straight that he got on the river.

Read in the Athletic that Benning missed out on Stecher because they were waiting to hear on Barrie, and Stecher had other offers but didn't want to wait.
So, Benning gonna Benning, and thanks to his terrible free agent signings, the Canucks are worse.

I prefer Markstrom at 6 mill versus Schmidt at 5.95
From vans perspective
Sign Markstrom and then lose Demko to the Kraken or let Markstrom walk, sign Holtby as the sacrificial lamb to the kraken and deal a 3rd for a top 3 Dman in Schmidt. Basically a damned if you do damned if you don’t situation for Benning because of the Kraken and he didn’t do too bad all things considered but I’m happy the Flames were there to land Markstrom.

You need to hope he can stay healthy at that hit/term.

####.
I'm pissed that Florida didn't get him for that price.
I'm doubly pissed that he goes to a rival in Vancouver.
I'm even more pissed that this happens as a result of an elite defenseman signing long-term in Vegas.
This has not been a good night.

No team out east was interested in a free defenseman and a 3rd round pick?
I'm looking at you Cali

Hey, listen, when the Panthers finally make me G.M. after my 10th essay of "I want to be the G.M.", I'll make moves like these.
Until then, I have to sit and watch.
