This just shows that the very last people you want guiding the strategic direction of an NHL franchise is the players.

The Oilers are STILL paying for all that success in the 80s, so Toews better buckle up. The Hawks will suck for the next 33 years. It's just math.

If there is any lesson to be learned from the oilers it is that putting players who "know a little bit about winning" in charge of management decisions is not a guarantee of success.

Although who knows, maybe Toews is a Sakic or Yzerman, who have both been successful...

Makes you wonder what the Hawks would look like if Kane and Toews had signed deals worth around 8 million a year? Honestly I don't think they'd be much better off, they still have an aging core and a GM that makes questionable decisions

Toews signed the 3rd highest contract AAV by caphit percentage of all time. Only Ovechkin and McDavid got a higher percentage at the time of signing.

I'm not going to defend Bowmans every move in last 5 years, but a good portion of them have been the result of having to field a 23 man roster when two players take 30 percent of your cap.

I don't begrudge Toews for taking that deal, but listening to him complain about a situation they had a sizeable part in creating makes my eyes roll.

How is the Bowman-Toews consultation on team moves supposed to go?

Bowman: We have 7 million in capspace. We need to sign 2 defenceman, 3 forwards and a starting goalie.

Toews: I want to win and be competitive. Lets sign Crawford.

Bowman: We can't afford Crawford because we have $21 million tied up in two players.

Toews: I can't believe you'd do this to me. You're the worst.

Isn't there a wrinkle here as well where they originally brought back Saad at the expense of Panarin at Toews' request?

Didn’t Saad get shipped out originally because of a Toews bonus that needed to be paid? Stanley cup bonus or something?

But that's kind of the point. Toews is claiming this type of conversation never happened.

You're absolutely right it would be pretty easy to have the conversation, but I get his frustration if Bowman didn't event comment let alone hint about it

I think it was conn Smythe bonus overage that lead to their first round of exodus like Versteeg, Laad, Byufglien IIRC. Maybe Saad was involved in that

Hawks also messed up filing paperwork which let a bunch of RFA’s go UFA some point along their cap trouble history
