He stated that he wants to win, Buffalo still has some holes to fill before even thinking about contending.

Ugh this is disappointing but I guess once Tanev signed his deal the writing was on the wall that we didn't have the room for him cap-wise.
Signings like Brouwer, Neal, Tanev, etc. are killing us. I think Hall was a serious possibility in Calgary if we had space.

My guess is he won't sign a long term deal elsewhere because he wants to be a Flame. This leaves the door open and more time for Calgary to make it happen. It also gives Buffalo a potential trade partner.
