I don't like this signing because the Flames really needed a PP quarterback in this Brodie replacement (and they didn't get it). Hopefully Andersson can grow into that player ASAP.
That's what the Flames are probably gambling on, and I truly believe it's a safe bet.
Essentially, Andersson replaces Brodie, Tanev steps into the Hamonic role.
That's an upgrade across the board to me.

The problem that I see with the Tanev deal is that it will probably cause the Flames to move out a guy like Derek Ryan when, really, the contract they would probably be best served by moving out is Chris Tanev.

Tanev is a better defender than Brodie...maybe less potential offence
right handed, same age, little less money
Seems odd to be freaking out over it...especially since Brodie is gone either way
Agreed that Brodie was gone either way, but it seemed like bad asset management by the organization when 2 of 3 of your top d-men are gone in the same off-season. Let's look at the pairings now:
Giordano-Andersson
Hanifin-Tanev
Valimaki-Kylington
Can't say I'm to confident in pretty much an all-in year to go in with that as your upper end depth. Right now Andersson, Valimaki and Kylington would be perfect for the third pairing. Gio needs another high end partner to create offence.
CP dumps all over the canucks as a mediocre team that gets lucky in the playoffs.... and treliving jumps at the opportunity to spend 10 million per year of our cap space to get two players from them.
How is Tanev on special teams? I’m assuming he’ll see regular PK rotation?
With Valimaki hopefully elevating into the top 4 sooner rather than later, this seems like a decent veteran add. Likely a better fit than Forbort and Gustaffson anyways.
Despite being hailed for his defensive play (he actually has good impacts on defense at 5v5), Tanev has consistently been one of the Canucks worst PK'ers throughout his career, giving up chances and goals at higher rates than his teammates.
If Gio has to lug Kylington around and cover for his mistakes he's going to be even less young n' fresh.
Pair Tanev and Gio and you have an elite shutdown pair to matchup against top lines, and still be able to move the puck

Again. CP doesn't have a collective opinion.
The Canucks have a good team now and many this season said so.
If you are going to take a shot at the board, don't be so lazy about it. EVERY day there are tons of different opinions posted on this board.
Stuff like this is annoying.

I wanted Barrie, but Tanev was my next choice. Heart and soul player, puts his body on the line to help the team, excellent defensively. Pair him with Hanifin and you can loosen the reigns on the kid a little.

Derek Ryan was primed to move before the Tanev signing. I agree with you though as I don’t see a way Tanev is a top 4 D in years 3 and 4 of this deal. It will be bought out and I see this deal much more in line with the Brouwer and Neal type contracts.

That's literally the exact opposite of what our resident Canuck fans have said.

well they need a RHD a lot more than Derek Ryan.
And you know I like Derek Ryan.

I like Ryan but lets not kid ourselves, he is a bottom 6 player. Tanev is a top 4 dman. Tanev is a very good defensive dman. This is not Harmonic. That said they paid $500,000 to much and a year to long.

Disagree. You've gained a more dynamic defensive defenseman in Tanev as a replacement for Hamonic (Andersson steps seamlessly into the Brodie role). Ryan is the expendable and more replaceable piece in my interpretation.

I know this will be absolutely shocking news, but mediocre and even bad teams, can have good players
