I love how yakupov doesn't even merit a mention. Does he even play in the NHL anymore?

Got me curious to see where, so according to Wikipedia:

"Nail Railovich Yakupov is a Russian professional ice hockey Forward who is currently playing with SKA Saint Petersburg in the Kontinental Hockey League."

I stumbled on this masterpiece penned by Mark Spector after the Oilers were eliminated from the 2017 playoffs: A joke no more, the Edmonton Oilers begin to expect Stanley Cups

Quote:

If the Edmonton Oilers accomplished one thing this season… Well, let Patrick Maroon summarize:

"Everyone knows the Edmonton Oilers are no joke anymore," said the straight-forward winger.

Truly, Oilers fans — and everyone inside the organization — would have settled for just that. Not being the butt of the joke anymore, or walking press boxes and sports bars from coast to coast and being met with that lingering, 10-year question that we all could never quite put our finger on:

"What the heck is going on in Edmonton?!?"

We can officially file the Decade of Darkness into the history books — its chapter entitled: “The Old Boys Club — A Cautionary Tale” — and we’ll open a new book in Edmonton, one where simply having a good November is no longer the barometer...

Edmonton will answer similar roster questions this summer facing the 29 other NHL clubs, but the two people finding the answers — McLellan and GM Peter Chiarelli — are two of the best in the business.

The biggest step owner Daryl Katz made here in Edmonton was to stop hiring his former Oilers heroes, bring in Bob Nicholson as team President, and listen to Nicholson when he recommended Chiarelli. Chiarelli hired McLellan, and in two seasons those two have completely turned this organization around...

They do things right here, again, and with McDavid and Draisaitl to build around, there is every opportunity — in fact, expectation — to win Stanley Cups again.

"After 10 years of being a bad hockey team and still having the fan base that we do, I think all the players really appreciate that," said McDavid. "It has to be a different mindset. We’re not going to surprise any teams anymore.

"Teams know, we’re going to be a good hockey team."

For some time to come, we would wager.
Mark Spector is no good.

Only Oilers media like Spector would jump straight to "cups". Can't even start with one. It's straight to the dynasty talk with them.

That's why they're getting another decade of darkness and rightfully so.

I hope they get a Century of Crap instead of a Decade of Darkness.

E=NG and I can't wait for them to lose against the Yotes.

No one wants to work or play for the Stampeders as it is a total gong show.

So basically you agree with me.... that the problem with the Stampeders back then was very similar to the problems with the Oilers today - mainly that the problem initially started at the top and spread downward, and the solution is to cure the head and not to cut off countless feet.

Now... I wasn't concentrating on the micro details of the Stamps that you certainly know more about than me, and I wasn't suggesting that it was the Flames Ownership Group that was the savior here. My point was, that a team that the owner treats like a toy for him and his family - where he hires not based on merit but based on some relationship (family, friend, or pure past idolization)... it's just not good.

Clearly Lowe and MacTavish aren't good hockey team managers.. the proof is in the Oilers. Because they were good players, doesn't necessarily mean they'd make good coaches - they might, or good general managers - they might. Because they won in one capacity, doesn't make them winners at the others.

Katz could also be great at building a great Oiler's empire, and suck at putting together a winning on ice team - although having a winning team would certainly help build that empire, it's clearly not required in Edmonton as we can see. If Katz realized his shortcomings and just concentrated on what he's good at, and left what he's not to competent people, and not his childhood idols - look out.

Mark Spector is no good.

I love this chapters title.... “The Old Boys Club — A Cautionary Tale”... as Mark says. So he knows what the problem is - and exactly how did the Oiler's solve it Mark - by hiring Gretzky and moving around MacT and Lowe chair to chair.

You need to win one at a time, it's impossible to win 3 or 4 cups in one year, but that seems exactly what they want to do in Edmonton. I guess all this winning has gone to their heads in Edmonton, all those winning lottery draft picks, they now just expect it.

I love reading old Spector articles. You'd think the guy would learn to quit writing in absolutes about how godamn great the oilers will be from now on after the tiniest bit of success. But nope, just keeps churning out these gems we get to look back on and laugh our asses off at.

Since that article, the Oilers are: 57 - 60 - 9 (23rd), 20th in GF, 25th in GA. McLellan has been fired (very unceremoniously), Chiarelli has re-established himself as the worst GM in the NHL, and the Oilers are again (remain) the laughing stock of the league.

Decade of Darkness, lol... they aren't even close to emerging into the light.

I think you've missed one. The way I see it:

1.0 was the Gagner, Cogliano, Brule, Schremp era, circa 2007-09
2.0 was the Hall, Eberle, Paajarvi, Omark, Hemsky, Penner era, circa 2010-12
3.0 was the Hall, RNH, Eberle, Yakupov, Schultz dynasty circa 2012-14
4.0 was the McDavid, Hall, Draisaitl, RNH, Klefbom era, circa 1015-19

1.0... "Honestly, I see 600 goals and 1,300 points!"
2.0... Oil Change - here come the Oilers!
3.0... Three #1 overalls - "it isn't a question of if, but how many!"
4.0... McGenerational! "It's a big change in Alberta, and it won't be changing back soon!"

The inevitable next rebuild will be 5.0 IMO.

The one consistency, through each of the first 4 rebuilds, is the unbridled bravado - even though they hadn't accomplished a thing yet, each new iteration was trumpeted in with chest pounding, unearned accolades, claims of grandeur, and absolute, blind arrogance.

And that is why we should never feel pity for their fans. ZERO humility, despite being the laughing stock of the NHL for 13 years and counting.
