Default Chile votes to rewrite constitution

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin...m3=%40BBCWorld
Quote:

There have been jubilant scenes in Chile after an overwhelming majority voted in support of rewriting Chile's constitution, which dates to the military rule of Gen Augusto Pinochet.

With almost all the ballots counted, 78% had voted "yes" in a referendum that was called after mass protests against inequality.

President Sebastián Piñera praised the peaceful vote.

He said it was "the beginning of a path that we must all walk together".

A lot of key mining sites in that country for the global supply chain. Thanks for posting.

It's great to hear that Chileans are grabbing hold of their democracy and shaking off the history of the US led coup which caused so much repression and carnage.

This is something that should probably be done in every country.

Just another example of the "leader of the free world" shining their democracy beacon from afar.

Not to defend the US because they most definitely played a huge part, it was not a "US led coup". I'd frame it more as a US sanctioned coup.

Quote:
"Although CIA did not instigate the coup that ended Allende's government on 11 September 1973, it was aware of coup-plotting by the military, had ongoing intelligence collection relationships with some plotters, and—because CIA did not discourage the takeover and had sought to instigate a coup in 1970—probably appeared to condone it." - National Intelligence Council
The US actually did attempt a coup in 1970, but that was to force a re-election (through bribes and backroom dealings) and hope Chileans vote for a less socialist leader.

Since that didn't work they went to plan B which was to create a bunch of unrest through economics and propaganda to "set the stage" and hope one happens.

I spent two amazing months there in 1994 from top to bottom. Even then, it was unusual for people with socialist leanings to be open about it in public.

200,000 Chileans were forced into exile - many settled in Canada, and in Edmonton in particular.
