Default Attempted assault by panhandler in Chinook area

There is a very aggressive panhandler in the Chinook area. He usually hangs out in front of the timmies at the shell station on 58th and Macleod. As I was walking back to work at lunch he rode up beside me on a bike yelling cigarette. I said No. He turned around on his bike at the corner of 58th ave and 1a street SE. Next thing I hear a tink sound and look down on the ground and saw a giant rock, he had thrown a rock at me right about head level, the rock missed fortunately hitting the street light post. As he rode away he grunted no cigarettes eh. I yelled "I will find you" at him as he rode away. He has a scraggly beard, long shoulder length curly hair. He was wearing a ball cap and sunglasses. Mid 20s to mid 30s. He always looks rough, I am sure many in my area have seen him before.

He is in this area near Chinook all the time. He will gruffly yell change, or cigarette at you when he wants something, never speaks in a sentence just gruffly yells as if he is entitled to something. He is now as far as I am concerned a risk to public safety.

I have reported him to police, did so as soon as I got back to work. If this person sounds familiar to anyone please let me know. We simply don't need people that are going to be this aggressive and risky out there harassing and potentially assaulting people.

I fill up at that shell almost exclusively. There's always some new rough looking dude sitting outside.
Usually they're not too aggressive, but occasionally I get yelled at.
I'm not sure I've noticed this guy though.

Generally I have had no problems there as I get my coffee daily at that timmies. Most of them are not aggressive, I think this one though has crossed the line probably more then once, I even saw the police pull him right out of the tims and they told him you are not allowed to be in here.

My friend had a rock thrown at her by a biker last night, Apr.23 also! She was walking to the Bolder Climbing gym, which is pretty close to Chinook. Said the guy was on a bike and threw a grapefruit size rock at her and then rode off.
She also reported the incident to CPS.

I wonder what the charge for something like that is, if any?

I think the only real solution is to close down all the Timmies.

The better solution involves a second transient, a cheese sandwich and a complete absence of morality and ethical conscientiousness.

But it will resolve the situation. From a certain point of view.

If the rock hits you, assault with a weapon.

I meant if it didn’t, but there was intent.

Same thing, since the charge of assault also covers the intent of the action, complete or not.

Ya this is absolutely complete garbage.

There's one thing that's really starting to aggravate me in life and that's intent to injure.

Like when a player is four feet from the boards in a men's rec league hockey game and he gets cross checked from behind.

Obviously you have to be very careful in this scenario with a potential mentally ill person with little to lose and maybe a drug problem. So I think you ended up doing the right thing. But I feel like if I witnessed something like this happen in a reasonably safe environment (like some of the crap that goes down on the Ctrain) - I might just lose it on the clown.

I looked at where that is and its really a few blocks from where I had the encounter. Wouldn't be surprised if its the same guy. Hope your friend is ok

More info on the person who did this so that there is a better chance at finding them and getting them off the streets which I know is probably a hopeless cause. Awareness that we do have people like this out there so people should be careful. Especially if you are out and about in my area. Not a big believer in sitting on my hands and letting bygones be bygones when there are dudes throwing rocks at people just because they don't want to give them anything.I see it as a public safety issue that people should be informed about at the very least.

Give him a smoke next time he asks. Seems simple to me.

I’m not sure it’s much of a public safety issue, definitely not one that you should take it upon yourself to declare when you’ve already informed the police.

It’s not like the guy is hard to find. Pretty sure I saw him last night (unless there were multiple dudes riding a bike around barking “cigarette?” at people yesterday near that gas station). Didn’t throw anything. Didn’t seem to pose a threat to anyone.

Spreading the information on the internet will not help get him off the street. That’s my two cents at least. Let the police deal with it.

I am not going to carry a pack of smokes around with me for the exclusive purpose of placating an odd transient on the off-chance of running into him.

And taking up smoking to make carrying smokes around make sense seems like a Pyrrhic victory.

Take a photo maybe. That would help the police and probably get rid of the guy at the same time.
