There is literally no reason to wear cargo shorts.

If you are going to wear shorts wear a nice golf short, or many board short companies also do a nice casual short as well.

Cargo shorts aren't ever the choice.

Likely NSFW

Mules & Clogs
Outdoor
Oxfords
Sandals
Slippers
Work & Safety Shoes

I have dress shoes I wear when needed, and I have nice shoes that I wear with pants, and I have literally one pair of red nike sneakers I wear with shorts. The sneakers are six years old and need to be replaced, but I'm not sure I want red sneakers again since I'm starting to actually care about what other people think...
Get a pair of Tom's and go without socks or with a pair of socks like posted _Q_ above. If you want to dress it up a bit, get a pair of loafers instead, but follow the same no sock/invisible sock rule.

Duffman, while I think that boat shoes are a bit past their season, this is actually more or less the answer I would have given too.

For sneakers go for something classic and timeless looking. Look up Adidas Stan Smith. Those should run you about $120.

If you're going the loafer route, unfortunately with dressier leather shoes, generally you get what you pay for. If you're going the Aldo or Steve Madden route, just wear a pair of Stan Smiths instead. If you're serious about getting nice loafers, go to O'Connor's or Harry Rosen and let them guide you. contrary to popular belief, for your first pair, DO NOT buy black shoes. Go with a nice dark brown with minimal red or yellow in the colour. Be prepared to pay about $400+ for them though. Oh and don't forget the matching leather belt. If you take care of your shoes, however, they'll potentially last a life time.

Some solid AF recommendations in here. I second boat shoes and Stan Smiths.

Also, a nice pair of ranger or camp moccasins would do you no wrong and could be worn 3 of 4 seasons too.

Plus, with the latter, you will actually look your age. I have two or three pair of the Rancourts and I love 'em.

Sockless is gross.
Boat shows are fugly.
You’re wearing non tailored, athletic type shorts. Your pretty well exclusively in sneaker or runner territory.

Yeah, I only have two pairs of shorts - both Patagonia Baggies and I only wear them around the house or to the beach with Tevas. No excuse to wear them anywhere else honestly.

Are Toms comfortable enough to walk around in and wear for 8-10 hour days?

I go into the office maybe three times a week, but it's an hour by transit (so standing/walking/transferring/etc), plus walking to get lunch etc, and just wearing them for a long time at once... I'm not exactly the most active person on the planet, but I also don't want to just tie some cardboard to my feet because they look good.

Sheesh, I wear Dickies shorts probably 365 days a year and I don't look like Mr Hemsworth. I wear them with Doc Martens/Vans/Converse or flip flops. I couldn't give a #### what people think i look like though. I go into the office 3 times a weeks for 3 hours a day - i wear jeans, the rest of the time i'm in Dickies shorts or board shorts

First, if you're wearing shorts to the office (this is already a huge mistake), you wear chino shorts.

With your chino shirts, you wear one of the following tops:
- A button-up shirt (long or short sleeve)
- A polo

With your chino shorts and collared shirt, you wear one of the following shoes:
- Boat shoes
- Casual dress shoes
- Loafers
- Mocassins
- Classic sneakers (Adidas Stan Smiths, for example)
- Toms (if you want to give off the vibe that you love frisbee and kombucha)

Do not wear visible socks.
Do not wear shorts with external pockets.
Do not wear athletic shorts.
Do not wear denim shorts.

These are your options. But ideally, don't wear shorts. But... y'know... if you do.

Agree with everything except the bolded part.

Nothing is more dorky than wearing a short sleeve shirt. Wearing it with shorts.... My God dude. If you want to show off your biceps while wearing shorts, just wear a well fitting polo.

I disagree. I wear a lot of short-sleeved shirts to the office, but they are typically camp shirts with a bit of a print on them.

I'm wearing this guy to the office today with some olive chinos and penny loafers and I think I look quite good.

Lol... I'm sitting here at the office reading all of these responses to my thread about shoes, while wearing cargo shorts and a button up short-sleeve cotton shirt with... different coloured lines on it (I don't even know what to call the design).

Edit for criteria: I work at a software company where I can get away with wearing probably anything, but I do still intend to wear them to the office that I sometimes go to. There's literally zero dress code, but the fact other humans are also there at the same time precludes me from moving all the way to "f-ck it" territory.
Dude..... I have wondered this for so long. The Birkenstock bashing from a few weeks ago shook me because it was the only footwear I was comfortable with in shorts. I feel like a dork in shoes and shorts.
