Iraq had some merits.. weak ones but Sadam did use mustard gas on his own people. Putin was like #### it no threat I just missed my old kgb days so let's take back Ukraine not apples to apples etc.....
Putin hated Gorbachev. He just wants to reverse everything he did. He also has called the ending of the cold war the greatest failure in Russaias history. Basically how trump hated Obama and seemed out to reverse everything he did
Putins one of the biggest war hawks dever to live. That's all he wants

My wife is Japanese and we both think you need to revisit your Canadian history lessons. Many Japanese Canadians lost their homes and businesses and were forcibly relocated to remote internment camps. We visited one which is preserved near Nelson many years ago and it brought my wife to tears. We have since brought our children there as well to ensure they never take their civil rights for granted.

So do you think that was the right course of action?

Pretty sure that the Czech Republic has reasons…
Soviet Union invasion of Czechoslovakia anyone? Solidarity with Ukraine?
A sovereign state making decisions, and a team making decisions.
Geopolitics > NHL hockey.
I have absolutely no idea how internment relates to this. A better example would be non vaccinated individuals denied entry to a country.
NHL will reschedule or change the locale. It’s the easiest, safest and least offensive way.

This is a game for points in the regular season standings -- not a "friendly" against a club team. The Predators also have a Russian player. I can understand the concern.
Cancellation is probably for the best, with the game made up once they are back in North America.

Yes, and can then be reopened when the Russian players are detained in Europe after the game.

I wonder what happened. 2 weeks ago, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs sent the NHL a letter saying they wouldn't allow them. Today, the Advisor for Foreign and Security Policy for the Prime Minister says it's cool?
From the Google translation of the Czech website linked in that tweet:
Quote:
It is very likely that the Czech authorities' change of opinion also contributed to the effort not to disrupt relations with the strategic partner of the USA. In America, they treat Russian athletes differently than in Europe.

Or when Russia has a referendum to annex Prague into their country and then draft the players into their “little” war.

Czechia is nowhere near Russia? Quite a few countries to go through first.

It's not quite a few countries, it's two. Ukraine and Slovakia are the only countries between Czech Republic and Russia.

The Russian army stalled 150 kilometres into Ukraine. It's not about to ‘go through’ any countries in the foreseeable future; especially not NATO members.

I said it in the OT Russia thread regarding escalation over there, come on Russia...touch Poland. I dare you.
You think the Ukrainians are tough? You cant handle the Poles. They are tough and prepared. The biggest problem the Ukrainians are having right now is getting materiel and supplies to Ukraine and then into people's hands.
The Poles are ready and set.
Either way though, the Russian players are nuts, if I were a Russian playing in the NHL my feet would not leave North American soil. Just because you're not near a warzone doesnt make being a Russian National abroad a safe proposition.
That lunatic Putin is crazy, he's not above targeting notable Russians in other countries.
Watch out for the windows.

Well, it's a good thing this got straightened out and the Sharks were able to go play those games. It would have been a shame if they had forfeited and had to start the season 0-2.
