Someone posted in a thread the other day a random point about Winnipeg being the geographic centre of Canada (it's close, depending on how you define it). That took me down a bit of a rabbit hole whereby I discovered the the Pole of Inaccessibility in Canada is in Alberta, along the Peace River. Which surprised me.
Pole if Inaccessibility is defined as the geographic location furthest from a coastline.

Neat! Hudson's Bay coming down into the centre of the country moves that westward I guess.

I just learned that a large part of the funding for the USS Arizona Memorial came from a benefit concert by Elvis, and from Arizona model kit sales.

Yesterday I learned that reindeer are part of the caribou family. Both sexes grow antlers yearly however male reindeer shed theirs in November, female reindeer shed theirs in the spring.
Santa's reindeer all have antlers in the pictures I see of them pulling his sled therefore they are all female.
Thanks to Brian Keating on CBC for that tidbit.

You ended everything with -imnida? This is correct behaviour. Start off formal until you can get your rank in relation to who you are talking to and drop to a different level of formal/polite/informal. I suppose with retail staff, etc you can start off just polite.

Speaking of Korea, I recently learned that there's a Korean age. The day you are born you are 1 years old, and you turn 2 on the next New Years.
So, if you are born on December 31st you turn 2 the next day.

Yep, I just learned of this recently too after reading that they're scrapping it - https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...ystem-scrapped
How did it work in everyday life? Did kids have to go to school at age 4 even though technically some of them may be two years old in reality?

Pretty sure that they use the western legal age for things like that but would like to know more. What age do Koreans say they are if someone on the street asks vs things like legal drinking age.

I always assumed they just rely on the birth year. IIRC, we have signs here that state that as well.
"Only individuals born before this year are allowed to drink."

We keep track of both our ages. And yes it's annoying.

IIRC the Korean language has different suffixes depending on the age and/or position of the person you're speaking with? Is that finely-calibrated enough that you'd need to know a 1-2 year difference or is that more like "he's 50 and I'm 30 type thing".
Very interesting

They debuted the Hell's Bell at that show. Wish I had been there.
