start with Cyanogen if you want to look at custom roms. it's the biggest and most well developed for ROM, and the support community at XDA for it is very good

Man what a great trade. I am lovin' this Captivate.
It's rooted so I can install and do what I want, but really, the default install along with all the apps and widgets, well, more than enough for me.
LauncherPro Plus, fantastic app and one I already bought.
And how I EVER lived without swype is beyond me. Who needs a small KB when I can swype faster?
Best trade I ever made. Android all the way for me now.

You ripped the guy off with this trade. Or he's just stupid. The 9700 is an old phone now. I love my 9700 myself, but if I had a galaxy trade I wouldn't even think twice.

LOL, yeah. I asked him why he didn't just sell it and buy a Bold and he said this was easier. Oh well, he is happy and I'm happy, so I suppose the trade works for everyone that way.
You would have to drag me away kicking and screaming from Android now. While not perfect, this is what an iPhone should have been IMO. I've had an iPhone, I've had a BB and now Android and I'm sorry, but Android wins.
And really, it literally is: Android passes BlackBerry as No. 1 on smartphones

told ya
funny to me though is that Android is what Windows mobile should have been. it's fully configurable, does exactly what i want, and it has the developer support. Apple on the other hand has always been locked down software and hardware wise, so the iphone was no surprise

It really is Mac vs PC all over again. Mac OS only runs on Mac hardware, Windows runs on anything someone can build. iOS runs on iDevices, Android will run on everything from a phone to a tablet to a car to ski goggles. Who is going to end up with more market share?

But can you run Android on a potato?

Just wait until Google releases a PC operating system, then things will get really interesting.

hey OK, two apps you must have if you haven't got them yet is SetCPU and TitaniumBackup. with SetCPU, you can underclock your CPU frequency with set profiles, so you can turn it down to 200mhz when the screen is off for example which is a huge battery saver. you can also set profiles for low battery, or even if the phone overheats if you're one to overclock
with TB you can remove any application from your phone, even the system ones. which means any bloatware from the manufacturer or provider can be tossed. it's also a must have if you ever want to try custom ROMS, since you can backup all your applications with their data so you don't lose your Angry Birds save games as an example

Yeah, I have TB, but really, I'm not so sure I really need to flash any custom ROM's. I'm pretty happy with the way the phone is after I have customized it the way I want with widgets, etc.
As for the apps I don't want, yeah, I know I can remove them, but really, with LauncherPro Plus, I can simply hide the icons away. It's not like I'm running out of room or anything like on my BB...LOL. I have tons of space. Gigs and gigs.
I'll look into SetCPU. I haven't really bothered with much stuff like that. So far my battery life is not too bad. I usually always charge my phone every night anyway, so it's not a big deal for me right now.
Thanks for the suggestions though. Good stuff.

Meh, you talked me into it. I bought SetCPU since it was only $1.99. Love the fact the apps are so cheap in the Android Market too.
I'm watching some videos and reading some tutorials as to how to use it, but I think I've got it. If anyone can offer any specific settings for the Captivate, I'm all ears. Thanks!

LOL...I've tried them out. Not for me. I did have an HTC Touch running Windows Mobile before getting my iPhone way back when. Didn't really like it. I realize the new Windows OS for phones is much different than back then, but I've seen the new OS and I can say Android is better.
