Default Custom monogram / engraving for flatware

Hi,

My wife and I are coming up on our 11th anniversary in a couple of months and the traditional gift is steel. She's indicated a couple of times in recent years that she'd like to update our flatware / cutlery so this seems like a good occasion to do so. I'd like to take it a step further and have the set we decide on monogrammed with our surname initial (engraving or some other process for achieving this with stainless steel). Any recommendations on where I could have this done locally (Calgary and surrounding communities)?

Also unsure whether the engraving / monogramming part is a bad idea to have done after the fact, as in maybe it could lead to defects in the integrity and longevity of the pieces. If that's the case, maybe we should instead be looking at sourcing the new flatware from somewhere that would include the customization as part of the manufacturing process. If so, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I've been combing the internet but have been struggling to find anything that does not come off cheap & ugly.

Thanks for any insight!

Have you check out etsy?

I may have a laser contact that would likely work for you. My laser is not powerful enough for metal.

Thanks for the reply, can I get the info to look into it? I was thinking probably stamping (high impact impression) would produce the best lasting result but if laser will produce a decent result I'm definitely open to looking at that option.

Thingsengraved.com. They have all those mall kiosks. I think they will engrave pretty much anything.

Far be it from me to question your decision making process, but are you sure it's wise to give your wife kitchenware as an anniversary gift?

We've been to Bridgette Bar three times in the past six months. 10/10 for us. Mid-century decor, everything we've had off the menu has been great, good cocktails. Atmosphere is more casual but stylish crowd.

For something more formal, great steak and a safer, more traditional menu, Vintage Chophouse is a reliable standby.

I'm just glad I'm on the aluminium anniversary this year (10), roll of Alcan foil was only $2.48 on sale!

Hopefully she appreciates I got the good stuff and didnt cheap out on the Great Value branded stuff.

It's an easy out if you can't think of something yourself.

What about making yourself a custom metal stamp with custom initials, image or Crest? I think it's around $10-30 depending on complexity. I wouldn't do a generic metal stamping set. Maybe experiment with the old flatware first or buy a set from goodwill/thrift store to practice?

I really can't imagine tapping in a shape on the handle truly screwing up the integrity of steel cutlery. It might also be easier if the handles aren't steel. A clay/tack mold to hold the flatware in place might also help with keeping the flatware consistently in place.

You could maybe even tap the design into other things like keys and stuff.

Ad for the cheap and ugly aspect, I feel like a good polishing after tapping in the design would make a big difference.
