2019 Cavalry FC season thread
Given that the schedule is now out, figured I'd start a thread dedicated to the 2019 season. Schedule is as follows (spoilered for size):
A new rendering of the stadium is below (spoilered for size/stadium porn):
And the club has signed Mason Trafford. Trafford was considered one of the best defenders in the NASL in the 4 years he played there. I would argue he's the best CB signed to date by any CPL club.

This schedule is actually bonkers. Calgary starts with five games in 19 days when you include the fact that the second class teams have to start the first leg of the Canadian Championship on May 15.

Given Canada's climate, any schedule is going to be compact. Just the reality of having snow on the ground 6 months of the year.
Anyone thinking of away games? I will do June 15 in Edmonton for sure, and am going to try and make the July 1 game in Victoria.

We live pretty close to Spruce Meadows so I looked at ticket pricing for me and the family. I actually chuckled out loud and closed the tab. I'd rather take the kids a WHL game or go once a year to a Jets/Flames game than pay these prices for what will likely be abysmal soccer. No offense intended to any Cavalry supporters.

Actually 5 games in the first 15 days! Or 7 in 22.
May 4 - York
May 8 - Valour
May 11 - @Forge
May 15 - Pacific (Voyageurs Cup)
May 18 - Edmonton
May 22 - @Pacific (Voyageurs Cup)
May 25 - Halifax

Any chance we might see Charlie Trafford follow on loan?

I'm pretty disappointed that between June 22 - October 5 there isn't a home Saturday game. There are the same amount of Saturday games in May than the rest of the season. I guess I just got used to the MLS season in Toronto. Almost every home regular season game they have in July-August is on a Saturday.
Ah well, I'm excited for the season to start.

Sounds like game packs will be available soon, and single game tickets will be available in April.
Also the training camp roster is out. An interesting name is Mauro Eustaquio, who played 3 years in Ottawa, a year in Edmonton and with the Canadian youth national teams. Also Malyk Hamilton who was with West Ham's academy, and with TFC II last year.

Some interesting names on that roster. Dane Domic is a Calgary kid who came up through the Villains club and then went over to Scotland for a spell. I'm surprised that Gabriel Bitar isn't on the roster as the other USports draft picks (Ongaro and Waterman) are.

Excited to catch a game or two this season. Might even consider a game pack.

In reading the article, it illustrated that the league really needs to do a better job with its spell check.
We all flagged the issue on how "Cavalry - Calgary - Calvary" can be mentally interchangeable, and that being a reason why the name wasn't ideal, but the team name is the team name, and they have to absolutely be on top of it on official things.

I like that teams are starting to develop their own personalities now through their signings.
Pacific FC has grabbed a bunch of Canadian internationals, though they are mostly older players (Marcel de Jong, Issey Nakajima-Farran, Marcus Haber) and are leaning heavily on BC born players.
Valour FC has a bunch of Canadian youth internationals (Carreiro, Thomas, Gutierrez) and seems to be building one of the younger teams.
Edmonton and Cavalry are both largely building on their previous teams with a few additions.
York 9 may be building off their TFC connections a couple former academy players and a loan signing from there and the Jimmy Brennan link.
HFX Wanderers has their set of Trinidad & Tobago players and are playing up their local links with some local youth players signing full contracts.
Forge FC is building off the Sigma academy.
Gives us something more than just the name and logo to relate to in the build-up to actual games.

I heard Jock Wilson on 770AM call them "Calvary FC" as well. I thought that was particularly gear-grinding.

Yup. But that's the price you pay when you choose an objectively stupid name for your team.

Admittedly, I don't love the name. But the truth is, I'm just looking forward to the season and I really hope it's successful. I'm a little biased because I took the plunge and bought tickets and I don't want that to be a complete waste of money, so I'm really hoping that the experience and presentation that they put together makes it worth it. I'm encouraged as they're not exactly launching this as second-rate, but it is true that the ticket prices make that a must.
At the same time, having a radio-host who can properly enunciate and pronounce words doesn't seem like a high bar.
