Default Return to the crease

Hey guys and gals! Nearly 6 years ago, I suffered a minor stroke during surgery. Now here I am wanting to make a return to the crease in the fall. What exercises can I do at home to prepare me for my return?

i am assuming you are medically cleared to do full activities?

If so then find some cardio you like - running
Lots of stretching with a routine
Some kind of weight program

Have a beer, air out your equipment and just go play. Stretch for a couple minutes before and you'll be fine. You'll be a true beer league goalie!

Don’t forget to practice giving advice to your team on scoring, claiming every goal was deflected by your D or the net was off... and your training to be a beer league keeper will be complete.

I use to work for Access Calgary (Handi Bus). Get on that service as soon as possible and use that service if you can. There are a lot programs out there. It is there for a reason.

About 5 years ago I threw the goalie pads on for the first time in about 15 years. Wow times flies!

For me, it was my glasses. When I stopped playing I didn't wear glasses. So I didn't wear any on the ice. Yeah, anything shot over a foot off the ice or from behind the face off circles, that was a goal. Simply couldn't see the puck.

Also muscle memory was still there, but I was bigger. Angles were way off for the first 10 minutes or so.

All that said. I miss it.

Thanks Dre, I’ve pushed myself to the point where I’m too strong to qualify for transit access. Many of the programs out there won’t accept me because of my drive to be stronger!

I never speak to my doctors before doing many thing, I get the idea in my head, do it and then tell them and they’re astonished at what I can accomplish and pleased with my progress.

If I asked my surgeon his response would be something similar to “when are your games so I can come watch?”

Work on your core. Had a guy buy gear and come play with us. He didn't tell us it was his first game ever until after we played. He couldn't stand up right for the 2nd half of the game. His back was too fatigued.

I would even consider Yoga, or better yet, DDPY. I became a better skater after doing DDPY because my core was strengthened and I had better balance and stability.

Good for you for all the progress you've made!

You forgot prepare to blame your D-men for every goal you let in and make sure you practice your "I'm a goalie so I shouldn't have to pay league fees because my pads are so expensive" chat.

Frankster

have you ever tried any of the p90x workouts?

i've done p90x and p90x3

if you aren't into the 'lifting routines', they also have some great workouts for cardio, yoga, agility & stretching
