Icon59 Oilers Team Report/Trade Deadline Review

Wow... what a terrible season to say the least. Since I was appointed gm of the city of champions back at the start of the 2016-17 season, I had a vision in mind and that was to compete in the 2018-19 season. My first two seasons were good, I believe we finished around 5th in the west both seasons, and with a 1st and 2nd round exit respectively. I had been putting the pieces in place for this season. At one point at the start of the season, my lineup was very strong:

Jonathan Marchessault (79) - William Karlsson (80) - Reilly Smith (77)
Anders Lee (74) - Mikael Granlund (76) - Jason Zucker (75)
Teuvo Teravainen (74) - Eric Haula (74) - Ryan Spooner (72)
Jesper Bratt (70) - Adrian Kempe (68) - Anthony Mantha (70)

John Klingberg (76) - Nate Schmidt (74)
Colton Parayko (75) - Nick Leddy (74)
Mike Matheson (72) - Joel Edmundson (72)

Robin Lehner (84)
Phillipp Grubauer (77)

This team should've been good but obviously we stunk. It led to a plethora of trades that put us into a "retooling" stage as opposed to rebuilding.

Major Trades in the Retool:

Jonathan Marchessault to Detroit for Mika Zibanejad and a 1st
Eric Haula to Buffalo for Tyler Bertuzzi, Ryan Lindgren and a 2nd
Nate Schmidt and Jack Studnicka to Buffalo for Samuel Girard, Gustav Olofsson and a 1st
Anders Lee, Akil Thomas and a 2nd to Buffalo for Bo Horvat and a 4th
Reilly Smith and others to NYI for Tyler Pitlick, Brandon Davidson, Adam Erne, Vladislav Kamenev, Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson, Zach Whitecloud, a 2nd and 2 4ths
Nick Leddy and Lukas Vejdemo to NYI for Cody Ceci and Justin Kloos
Ryan Spooner to Detroit for Brock McGinn and a 3rd
Cody Ceci, Brock McGinn, and others to Columbus for Gabriel Vilardi, Alexandre Texier and others

Also made other minor moves such as acquiring Ben Harpur and Nick Seeler or trading Tyler Pitlick, Brandon Davidson and Jake Dotchin

We'd currently be picking 7th in the draft but of course I traded it to Minnesota thinking we'd be good this year. That pick could fall lower if Dallas or LA passes us, or higher if we pass St Louis or Pittsburgh.

Going into next year, we expect to compete, but we're not gonna get cocky again. The depth chart for next year currently looks something like this

Ryan Dzingel-Mika Zibanejad-Teuvo Teravainen
Jason Zucker-Bo Horvat-Mikael Granlund
Tyler Bertuzzi-William Karlsson-Anthony Mantha
Jesper Bratt-Adrian Kempe-Anthony Beauvillier
Austin Wagner-Lukas Sedlak-Christian Fischer
Adam Erne-Colby Cave

John Klingberg-Colton Parayko
Samuel Girard-Mike Matheson
Joel Edmundson-Joe Morrow
Ben Harpur-Nick Seeler

Robin Lehner
Phillipp Grubauer
Alexander Georgiev

In the meantime, we will sit back, play some golf, watch the playoffs, and hope and pray our draft pick doesn't turn into Jack Hughes or Kaapo Kakko in the lottery.
