I'm not talking about the financials. I'm saying that it was already sketchy enough that it was Calgary's farm team. They should have been a little more wise about the colour choices and name choice. It was basically "BAM HERE IS FLAMES TEAM!!!" right in Canuck territory. They didn't have to be so brazen.

Cam Tucker @CamTucker_Metro
#Flames CEO Ken King on #AHLHeat leaving #Abbotsford: "...could not see a conclusion that benefited all parties involved."

Dan Kinvig @DanKinvig
King: "In the best interest of everyone, sadly, I think this is the most appropriate conclusion." Does not specify where Heat are moving.

Pat Steinberg @Fan960Steinberg
I'm told reports of the #Flames moving their farm team to Glens Falls, NY are premature at this time.

Cam Tucker @CamTucker_Metro
#Abbotsford mayor Bruce Banman calls today "bittersweet." Says the city has terminated it's agreement with #AHLHeat at end of this season

Still have a couple of those jerseys (including a team signed jersey with the likes of Giordano, McElhinney, Boyd, etc) in storage. Those were two fun years for me. Started as a fan, then a 'volunteer', then a part of the media/communications group. If they would have stayed I likely would be involved in professional hockey in some capacity. Met a lot of good people.

Default New Strategic Direction For Abbotsford?

@CamTucker_Metro: Bruce Banman says actual losses amount to $7.2 million. Has not ruled out getting an AHL franchise in future. #Abbotsford #AHLHeat

@ElliottPap: Abbotsford mayor also says it cost them $5.5 million to terminate agreement with Flames..

@mikehellinger12: City of #Abbotsford will pay $5.5 million to terminate the 10yr supply fee agreement w/Heat and building will be rebranded Abbotsford Centre

Ken King says Flames have multiple options as destination for Heat, including Glens Falls NY. Will take their time making a decision.

who has an empty or new building without a tenant who will offer the Flames another sweetheart deal like the past two towns?

The Flames learned from their mistake in Omaha. No more 50/50 partnerships. The Flames own the franchise 100% and pay hockey-related expenses; the city or local partners provide the building, marketing and guaranteed revenue or cover losses

Finding a good fit for an AHL team is really difficult. Omaha had a history of hockey but arrogance of management (compete with the long established junior & college team rather than work with them) quickly put off the locals, by the time the ship was righted it was already too late. Quad Cities 'traded up' from the Ducks to the QC Flames, but when the team was average and failed to qualify for the playoffs, it felt like people longed for the Ducks. Like said above, with the Flames bleeding money and Abbotsford willing to eat losses the move to B.C. made financial sense.

As for a new location I could see Glen Falls, Kansas City, or another established AHL market that is losing or just lost their team (eg Houston). Doubt that the Flames will get another sweetheart deal like they did with the Heat, so it may be best to relocate to Glen Falls where you know the team will be appreciated and likely at least break even.

One has to question why Abbotsford didn't pony up the cash to terminate the contract last season when Vancouver was ready to move right away

Not seeing the contract or knowing the terms, I would say that the exit clause could not be enacted at that time. It was only Year 4. The end of this season is Year 5 and the keyboard contract lawyer in me thinks that might have been the earliest review/exit date there was.

Many leases have a half life review written into them.

yeah I don't get that either. It took the Canucks until June to finalize things with Utica ... would have made sense for Abbotsford to terminate the Flames deal then and strike a deal with Vancouver. Why let the Canucks - the only NHL team whose farmteam would really work in Abbotsford - work out a 6 year deal with Utica when you plan to buyout the Flames anyway? Really weird. Unless Drury18 is right, of course ... but hey, there were already rumblings about this last spring, so maybe they already had that option last season.

According to this, they had the option last year:

Maybe the $ amount was a lot more, but the option was definitely there

Had a friend at the press conference, these were his notes:

Ryan Walter:
  • Happy with the team, especially its winning record over the last five years.
  • Takes pride in the fact they were a successful team.
  • They won more games than any other team in this market.
  • Proud they made the playoffs in three of the last five years.

Ken King:
  • Thanked the players.
  • Thanked Ryan Walter for the brilliant leadership he displayed in the face of odds.
  • Expressed gratitude to the loyal Heat fans.
  • He said "sadly" this is the "appropriate, yet regrettable conclusion to the Heat franchise."
  • They wanted the first Western outpost for the AHL.
  • Would've much rather stayed than left.
  • They had a foot and a half of paper researched suggesting that the AHL would work in this market. Has no idea why the results went against what the research had suggested.
  • They have several options for where to go, including the rumoured Glen Falls, NY.
  • Said they need to get this new location right. They may even consider a temporary stop if it gets them the perfect location. They're going to take their time.
  • He will travel with Burke to several locations.
  • Told the citizens of Abbotsford that you don't know what you've lost until it's gone re: the Heat.

Mayor Bruce Banman:
  • Next steps start with a new term with a team and a new contract.
  • This is the best scenario financially for the city of Abbotsford.
  • Thanked Ken King on working with them to relocate.
  • They're ushering a new strategy is three parts: 1) Looking for naming rights, 2) re-negotiate with Global Spectrum on the building management, 3) improving community access for amateur sports in the building.
  • This is the best deal for the residents of Abbotsford.
  • They're rebranding the building, firstly by naming it the Abbotsford Centre. Wants it to be at the centre of the community.
  • Over the last five years they've lost $7.2 million.
  • They haven't ruled out another AHL team. Said they'll have to see what happens with the Canucks.
  • He's saved taxpayers 50% of what was owed, resulting in a savings of $5.5 million. This $5.5 million is the amount the City of Abbotsford has paid the Calgary Flames to terminate the contract.
  • -$1.5 million of that $5.5 million payout will come out of this year's budget.
  • Said they'll be saving $2 million per year now.
  • He wants a "revenue positive anchor" in the building.

Ryan Walter on the Fan 960 says he saw some encouraging numbers with the lockout last year, but that was virtually wiped out when the story of the Canucks possibly coming to Abbotsford broke. Says since the story broke some feedback he got was that once the Canucks settled in people would buy tickets.
