Lol! They're going to pay those fines using their ill-gotten CRA GST Refunds.

Aren't the fines pretty symbolic? It doesn't seem like they have any real assets to pay these things off with and they won't be making any money while in jail. The $275K they managed to get in refunds they probably sunk into unrecoverable costs like paying bills. Will the CRA garnish them for the rest of their lives?

Hah! Never!

I was taught that if you're going to steal then you steal once. Steal Big. Then disappear.

Long haul scams are for idiots and amateurs.

This really is the way to do it. When you read about stories like these I can't stop thinking about what they thought their end game was going to be. Just keep going forever? Prior fraud often requires future fraud to continue to cover up, and people just keep on going as if they can do it indefinitely. It's usually what gets them caught in the end by sticking around doing the same thing for so long.

Thos jail terms are laughably short considering they fleeced the government for millions. Almost makes it seem worth it if you just hide enough money that after your two year term you pay the fine and retire off the rest.

At that point, why even pay the fine?

CRA has recouped none of the stolen funds. It doesnt appear that there is much impetus for the scammers to repay that.

So whats the incentive to pay their fines?

They only got $275K, the rest was held back due to suspicions.

We don't know what their actual family net worth is. Maybe they can pay the fines? If they are related to some of the Sakers in Quebec and Ontario, then they might have money stashed away somewhere.

Yeah... I'm pretty sure that's not the case.

Your point is valid. It's a fair question. But... the answer is... Likely no
