Treliving on the Fan
Wasn't sure where to put this but here is my paraphrased transcript on Brad's interview on the fan this morning. I am sure the full interview will be posted on the Fan's website at some point.
Brad:
-schedule is a fluid situation
-disappointing where we find ourselves, not what anyone expected
-such a challenge to score goals, didn't think we'd lead the league but didn't expect this much of an issue
-defensively we've been not too bad. When we give up a chance, it's ending up in the back of our net
-Covid presents challenges but they are challenges for everyone.
-restrictions are hardest on young or single players, no one around. No family, friends, etc
-Darryl and I have a really good relationship, talk daily.
-when he first came I left him to it a bit so he could get a feel for the group
-our depth up front hasn't worked out to plan
-its close to business as usual leading up to the deadline but there has been a lack of transactions
-lots of teams willing to wait as long as they can before deciding what they will do
-Boomer asks about the number of buyers...not sure there is more. It is likely a pure rental deadline.
-Seattle and the flat cap will make it more difficult and teams will be more cautious
-the amateur level is the biggest challenge of all
-talks specifically about the OHL, where there has been 0 games played
-draft eligible players are being watched on film from last year's games
-we've had monthly Zoom calls with the amateur staff
-the '21 draft will be interesting
-I've had lots of conversations with Ron Francis about Seattle and their plan
-nothing specific on our current roster but more about what is the compensation for not taking certain players
-we are not in a position to give up assets for rentals
-but we are always looking to add with players with term
-we are looking at both sides of it, buying & selling
-major changes usually happen in the offseason
-I haven't been a real busy deadline guy but we are working the phones to see what happens

Sounds like he is saying all of the right things. Minor sell at the deadline and wholesale changes in the off season is my prediction. Tough season!

We want changes to be made, but it’s extremely difficult to sell anyone, especially the core players.
Our pending UFAs are a different story, if you can find suitors, go for it.
Also, the OHL not playing games can be advantageous for drafting a great player in a later round. Hopefully our scouts are pouncing on that opportunity.

Will be an interesting offseason though and maybe not the worst time to sell.
You're going to have teams trying to make moves to set up their protection lists, and then between the expansion draft and the draft you're going to have teams that maybe lose a good player that carried a higher cap hit in the expansion draft, and may be looking to fill that hole in a deal.

This is so Flames. Takes too long to realize there's a problem and you need to make moves and when you finally do, the circumstances make the trade value just horrendous.
It'd be hilarious if it was another team.

I guess at this point we can hope to completely tank. Sounds like Brad isn't going anywhere and the core isn't going to fix themselves. I am a bit surprised under Darryl we are not seeing a better team. Core has turned out to be pathetic shrinking violets under Sutter instead of thriving.
Blow it up and hand Tre his walking papers. That will happen but will be forced on the organization instead of being proactive.

If we end up picking in that 4-7 range it might be a good time to pick up a D man to kick start the rebuild as they typically take a bit longer to have an impact in the NHL. Power, Hughes, and Clarke all look good.
My preference will also be to take a forward though. Beniers, Johnson, and Guenther all look really good.

I think that getting Sutter in to coach Plan A was to light a fire under the core, sort of like he did in LA.
Now plan B is to play out the string and wait for the core to be changed to players that can be motivated to be better version of themselves.
Problem with that is that the trade value is going down. I wouldn't be surprised to see a few players Gaudreau, Monahan, Lindholm, Andersson shut down after the trade deadline to try to maintain their off season trade value.
I really can't see any team willing to pay a premium at the trade deadline to get these guys to get them through an extra playoff round.

That would be a very Treliving thing to do. I was under the impression that we have some good young D with potential, even if they haven’t progressed this year. Where we consistently struggle is at F... I hope they shoot for some high end talent there.

I think Clarke is going to be the gem of the draft. He's got the fox-Makar skill set.
Beniers is getting slept on a bit because he's not as game breaking or eye popping as some of his predecessors, but IMO is one of the most complete forwards that has come through the top of the draft in a while. Offensive numbers are nothing to sneeze at too. When he puts on weight he will be tough to stop in tight. IMO he's somewhere between J Staal and Toews potential wise.
Power I am a bit more dubious of. He is huge, but IMO is a player who has benefited from physical superiority to his peers. Here's the thing though; he doesnt use his size as a weapon really, he's not physically dominating peers with brute strength. But his reach and puck control are used very effectively. I might have too much of a lense on him because he has been followed for a really long time, but I think he's more of an Erik Johnson than a weber or pronger.
Kent Johnson reminds me of a lankier sam bennett. His big point producing season came in the BCHL; hard to project if he actually has that sort of offensive upside.

The last time I looked the best D were in the top 4 of the draft and then the forwards (different than normal). That said, teams are often a little reluctant to go high on a D so at least one of the top 4 will likely fall a few steps.
I just want fast players. The Flames have one guy that has real speed (luckily he is young). Two if you count Kylington.

What player could they possibly give up an asset to protect from the expansion draft?
*cringe*
Probably Gio or something like that lol

Or an asset they haven’t acquired yet. Knowing these things, and the cost of these potential deals, is his job. Not waiting until the last minute to get through to a new GM who has 31 teams calling him.
