I can't see Talbot signing for a "redemption year" unless the team commits to playing him as the starter. I also think Rittich needs to be given the ball as the starter in order to progress further.

- Rittich is too good to be a backup
- Talbot can't prove he's still a starter unless he succeeds as a starter.

So the question becomes do the Flames believe Rittich is a starting goalie?
Yes I believe the Flames do believe Rittich can be a starter.

His usage when healthy was a pretty good indicator of this.

Not sure why some of you are talking about looking to find a long term #1. I think that is Rittich’s role until he proves he can’t handle it.

Me: Calgary has a Cup, SJ doesn’t.
Him: Calgary’s been in the league longer than SJ.
Me: Not that much longer...
Him: Ok, but you agree they’ve been in the league longer?
Me: Well yeah
Him: Ok so I’m right?
Me: About that, yes...
Him: Right. So what’s the problem?
Me: That’s not what we were talking about.
Him: What were we talking about?
Me: You said the SJ franchise has won more than Calgary has, I pointed out that Calgary has a Cup.
Him. Did we not just agree that Calgary’s been around longer?
Me: Yes, but
Him: And you said I was right
Me: Dude...
Him: So now you’re saying I’m wrong?
Me: Well no
Him: Ok, so I’m right. What’s the problem?

Brian Elliott signed for 2 million, I wonder if the Flames can sign Talbot for 1 or 2 years at an AAV around 2.75 million? I wouldn't mind that. Low risk move that has potential for working out well for the Flames.

If Talbot wants a 1 year prove it deal he can’t be looking at much more than the $2M Elliott signed for

Elliott > Talbot

If Talbot expects $2 million, look elsewhere.

I really don't think any of the options out there for this team will move the needle at all. Hopefully Rittich just takes the crease over, otherwise it's another pretty meh tandem for the Flames.

I think the alligator is supposed to eat the better/bigger one of the two. Not point to the better/bigger one. Verifying this right now with my 7 year old.

Alligator? It's Pac-Man.

I stand by my post, although they are probably more equal I suppose. Equally stinky.

Sam Carchidi @BroadStBull
Cam Talbot let #Flyers know he wants to go to a team where he will play more. Hopes to be a starter somewhere.

My beer league goaltender analysis of Cam Talbot:
  • Generally favourable to having him on the Flames... particularly tied to Rittich. This is a nice tandem. Talbot has the size, mobility and give-a-s level to be an above average starter.
  • Like many goalies on the Oilers, could not mentally stay on their game because of the lack of defensive structure and commitment.
  • Game struggled significantly as a result. You could actually see this start to happen in the Oilers playoff run a few years back when he played a bajillion games.
  • He began to play way out of his crease to cut down on the first opportunity.
  • Unfortunately, when you do that there's a higher likeihood of the second oppotunity and he got burned lots on that in subsequent seasons. Stopped trusting his teammates... when you see Eric Gryba for 15+ minutes a night that's fair enough.
  • Tried to re-adjust and play in tighter but that's not his game. This resulted in those softies you saw frequently.
  • This led to what looked like a lack of confidence. I could see it in his body language and he seemed to look lost during the play.

Pretty much the above is exactly what happened to Dubnyk, now Koskinen and others with that tire fire of a franchise.

Talbot is young enough to get back to form with a proper defense structure. I think he could post a .915+ save percentage over 40+ games... which I would take in a heartbeat for what he's going to cost.

As long as Talbot doesn't adopt the downward facing snow angel for a goaltending style, I'm good with him.

Some people want him to prove he can be a #1 for a season and the playoffs before anointing him as such.

Didn't Talbot struggle with getting beat on the glove side last year. If teams have found a weakness like that it makes me worried that he can rebound.

Talbot’s “thing” last year were early goals on the first shot of games/periods. Koskinen had the glove hand issues

Well he can’t really prove he’s a #1 until you hand him the #1 reins now can he?

His play last year shows a lot of promise that he can be a #1.

Therefore the next logical step is to hand him the reins and see if he can handle it. Of course Treliving won’t bank everything on it and Talbot would be a good tandem partner for Rittich as he’d be able to potentially take over #1 if Rittich falters.

Some fans are nervous nellies and will never be comfortable handing the reins to a young goalie. But it’s Rittich’s time. It makes sense and he’s earned the chance.
