The alternative is fair catch, and few returns? Busting your ass downfield to watch someone catch the ball? That seems worse to me.

I disagree, the catcher needs to see the cover team and make the decision to fair catch or not. He needs to be aware of what it going on around him.

I might be wrong with this, but doesn't no yard get called even if the ball is on the ground? If that is the case, I would hope we can agree that a ball on the turf should be fair game for anyone.

I also don't like the starting from the 35(?) after a score, I like kick offs and returns.

That's an option that the scored upon team has and it only applies to field goals (touchdown is always followed by a kick-off). Also in the last three minutes of the game, that option is removed (the scoring team must kick-off after a field goal).

Thanks for the clarification.

I still don't like the option to not kick off.

Most kicks in the NFL will result in touch backs now, unless the kicker intentionally kicks it shorter to bait a return.

Even if no one has touched it? That makes no sense.
No yards is only a 5 yard penalty if the ball hits the turf. Worth taking the penalty to limit a return.

Kick offs result in the most head injuries, leagues are actively trying to reduce them.
