Default Mowing grass low?

I’ve seen a few nice yards steady and most have the grass cut pretty low.. is that safe to do right now? Tried looking it up online but hard to figure out if it’s right for Calgary.

I’ve raked and dethatched my lawn but wondering if I should mow at a lower level.

I find I get more action if I mow my grass low.

YMMV.

Short grass in the front makes the house look bigger

It's been so long since I've been to a house with grass out front I barely remember what it looks like, when I was a kid though every house had long luxurious grass, some even had pampas, that crap was so long you couldnt even see what was under it, dont miss that frankly

Mow low in the spring, that’s mostly last years dead grass anyway. The traditional way was to burn it off but that is frowned upon nowadays.

We have to mow our lawns in Calgary now? There are still patches of snow and ice on mine that haven't been melted away!!

Today is a good day to do it with with some moisture coming tomorrow, shortening the dead growth will allow it to green up noticeably faster.

I have one of the nicest lawns around. As soon as the snow is gone and it’s dry I do one cut not too low and the bagged grass goes into the organic cart. I wait at least 3-4 days and cut it again shorter. I’ve already done the second cut and my grass is starting to green. That’s when we dethatch. For summer cuts I mulch and leave the grass long except I’ll cut it short if we’re going away longer than two weeks.

My yard is huge so I never rake even in fall. I use my battery mower like a vacuum to pick up leaves. I never water either.

Newbie question: When do you start fertilizing and what’s the best fertilizer to use?

Tenacity. Read the label. Okay that's not a fertilizer but you need it, then use whatever fertilizer you find on sale.

edit - I bought Tenacity here

Just raked and cut my front lawn short yesterday (ran out of time for the back and now I missed my window before the snow hit). I mow low in the spring as others mentioned to remove all the dead stuff. My lawn is flawless so...

Lots of fertilizer choices out there however most of them have something written on the front and certainly the back regarding ideal application timing. Given all the forecast moisture this entire week I went ahead yesterday already with my first application of fertilizer. I already have a some green grass shoots generally so it made sense to me. Already had a number of dang weeds too. Sigh...

I’m going to try to use scotts weed prevent fertilizer for my first and second application instead of the regular fertilizer. I’m hoping to see some sort of difference.

The 2-in-1 fertilizer and weed killer was phenomenal when I used it a few years back. Not sure if we're allowed to use it in Calgary anymore... I'm out anyways but I do recall seeing it in Kelowna a few years back.

Don’t you know you’re supposed to make soup out of your dandelions now?

There are pre-emergent options to keeping the weeds down on your lawn, but you need to get that stuff down early (as in it's likely too late this year). I've used it for several years now and it doesn't completely eliminate weeds, but there usually isn't very many and they are easy to manage.

Anyone else cut it low in the front, but leave it long in the back?
