Interesting that Vitali Klitschko (yes, the boxer) is the leader of the opposition and seems pretty instrumental in trying to bring down the reigning regime.

Yanukovych has been run out of town! Protesters and the press have taken over his residence, parliament has voted to strip him of his powers and elections have been set for May 25th
http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/...A1G0OU20140222

One of his jailed opposition leaders Yulia Tymoshenko has been released

Yanukovych, denouncing the 'coup' in the capital, has fled the capital for the Russian speaking eastern regions. Kharkov is apparently where he is hiding out.

Russia is reportedly ready to fight a war in the Ukraine to protect Russian Ukrainians in the Crimea. I suspect this is mostly sabre rattling to protect their naval base.

Former prime minister and symbol for the protests Yulia Tymoshenko has been released from prison (she was jailed on trumped up charges in 2011) by order of the Ukraine parliament. She is on a flight to Kiev right now. She will be running for president in the new elections ordered on May 25th, 2014.

Yanukovych has been impeached by the Ukraine parliament.

This is Yulia Tymoshenko on her flight:

The Kiev protesters have taken over the city and are providing security as the police forces are not to be found... here are some images:

One of those times where it's an absolute stain on your heritage to be on the side of the 'police'.

Usually the most despicable actors in all of this.

Yup. I constantly hear all about the awesome Ukraine from my wife's side of the family but I never see anyone buying any tickets home.

Hell, most of the Ukrainians I deal with on a constant basis are chest-thumping pro-Ukraine people who have never been within 3000 miles of Kiev.

My family came to Canada around 1900. I went over there about a year ago and visited the villages they came from (we don't have any known relatives still over there) and life there has essentially not changed over the last century. The cities are fairly modern and living in Kiev or Lviv wouldn't be that different from most cities in eastern Europe but the villages have not modernized at all.

I do fully appreciate the reasons why my ancestors left to start over in Canada and I'm grateful that they did. At the same time I am proud of my heritage and we preserve some of the traditions that came with them.

Yeah I posted that a few years ago in the WGMG thread.

The faux nationalism of people for countries that they have never been to.

I have a friend that claims to be Italian, but have never been there, can't speak it. He has family that are from there, but generations removed.

I always laugh at people, whether they be Ukranian, Lebanese, Russian or from elsewhere that claim Canada sucks and wherever they are from is vastly superior. If it's so great why did your family leave?

There were a bunch of small towns in Iowa that had a very large latino community that would write crap like viva Mexico, USA sucks and would just down right blast the US. If Mexico was so great then you can go back....

Its just a bunch of criminals taking power in the Ukraine. Yes I agree the previous government was corrupt, but this is so much worse.
Watch those peacful protestors for yourself:
*warning: might be some shocking images.
