Bedard will be legit. The kid looks amazing in so many aspects of the game. Start the tank for him now.

The Flames probably have a higher chance at Bedard than they do at Wright.
The Flames tend to be good one year, and bad the next. So they'll probably be good next year (and miss out on - 2022 Wright) and then be bad just in time for Bedard (2023).
Backlund, Lucic, Markstrom and Taven will be making $21 million (2022-2023) while being in their mid-thirties. The cap will still be flat. So that might really be the time to tank it.

From what I can find he is supposed to be more of a power forward using size and aggression to be effective as opposed to skill. But is supposed to have good skating ability.
Is he ranked as a possible third round prospect because he might be shifted to the wing as a grinding boards type player?
|
I’ve seen him ranked plenty in the second round in mock drafts, etc. His skating is ok when he gets up to speed, but his startup, co-ordination, and agility need work-a common problem with kids his size. He is good at taking away the middle of the ice though, and plays a good, grinding power-forward game.

It's going to be weird...
OHL kids didn't even play a season... a smattering of already-drafted players like Rory Kerins getting only getting a cup of coffee in minor pro.
How do you fairly assess the 2021 draft class?

Yeah, when it comes to players from the other leagues, you at least have a smaller sample size of games to go on. Many of the draft eligible kids from the OHL have been playing some games in Europe, at least, but not all of them. I guess you trust your scouts to have gotten to know these kids enough last season.
I had heard a rumour at some point that they were thinking of holding the 2021 Draft in 2022, but obviously that never came to fruition.

I'd make this draft an extra two rounds.... give teams two extra darts to shoot with.

That's actually a really good idea, I would totally get behind that. Nobody gets hurt in that scenario. What's Gary Bettman's number?

Whats the read on Matthew Coronato? He's listed #21 on Bob's list with 45 goals and 80 points? Highest goal total I can see in the first round.

Lots to like here-only real drawback is that he's smallish, but he makes up for it with his compete, and his feistiness. 55PIMs in 50 games. 80 points in the USHL is pretty impressive, considering that it's said to be a hard league to score in, however-players that play there, but not on any of the development teams, are looked down on a bit, but it shouldn't scare anyone off. Perhaps that's why he can be seen on some lists in the middle of the first round, and mid-second on other lists. Good skater, great shot, goes to the net.

A comparable might be Sam Colangelo- a bit bigger but doesnt play a heavy game. Much less impressive stats in USHL but was still generating 1st round hype ahead of the draft. Ended up going 36.

Coronato is a much superior player, but the crap shoot that is this year could see him picked anywhere from 15-45 IMO. It would be pretty cool to snag a guy like this with our 2nd, but I think someone else will take a sniff first.

David Branch, commissioner of the CHL, mentioned on John Shannon’s podcast that they are discussing having a 2021 Draft prospect tourney in Edmonton in late June. It would feature the top picks from all 3 leagues, a partial combine, and player interviews for the NHL teams.

Thought this was interesting to post: Draft-eligible Goalie Sebastian Cossa of the Oil Kings (who's listed on the WHL site as being 6'6.5") has a stat line of 1.49GAA,.944%. Dustin Wolf has a stat line of 1.69GAA, .944%. Cossa's Oil Kings have a win % of .912, while Wolf's Silvertips have a win % of .800. Both goalies have played 14 games.
Cossa looks like a good candidate to go in the latter half of the first round.

Chaz for me too. Hoping that Johnson slips to us though. I've seen that kid play a lot and he's a special talent.
