McDavid is actually a failure of development. Maybe the most talented player ever, and no one ever thought to tell him about defence, or even using alternate strategies to deal with checkers.
I've argued that McDavid is blazing fast, great on his skates, has a good shot. But he's not a super well rounded player. At time he seems to be incredibly selfish with the puck. I don't think his game has changed all that much since he got to the NHL. He doesn't give that big of a crap about the defensive side of the game,
You look at McKinnen, and his game has certainly evolved, I think he's also a far smarter player then McDavid and less selfish.
When that day comes when McDavid hits the age where he loses that inevitable step, his decline will be pretty rapid.

McKinnon also doesn't mind a rough game, when you hit him he actually rises his game a notch, It's the opposite with McDavid. Tonight Toronto hit him hard a few times when finishing their checks and he was invisible.

He wasn’t completely invisible...when he was whining for calls.
Finished the Oilers game and turned on the Avs game. Anyone that ever mentions McAvi as the best player in the game needs to be pushed off a cliff. MacKinnon is on another level at all areas of the ice.
Not only that, it highlights how pitiful Canadian game/player analysis is.

Too bad no one at sportsnet will watch an Avs game all year to begin to figure this out.
Watching that fourth leafs goal tonight is just proof Edmonton defence is lacking, despite what the EDM media says. Guy walks out of the corner, nurse holds him, then backs off and guy walks in and scores.
Nurse is a serviceable NHL defence man, but on a normal team he is a solid third pair, maybe second pair at his very best. In No Good Land, he is being ridden as a #1, crazy amount of minutes. The Edmonton media is telling him he is Victor Hedman. Based on his pinches and his unscreened shots into the goalies chest maybe he is buying into it. Can’t blame him for trying I guess. If you’re the best of the worst on a team you have no choice...
At this point I get more joy from the Coilers losing then I do from the flames winning.
The media lead up to this game was insufferable. ‘Jesus on skates’ and ‘Austin the moustache’ playing against eachother was covered as if it was an Olympic event. I wonder what the number of articles written was. I think the media coverage for wrestlemania 14 was more enjoyable....I’m disappointed no one crushed beer on their head like Stone cold did.

Tonight shows how much of a bond that Auston Matthews and Connor McDavid built up when training together over the offseason. Matthews took the night off, and McDavid said "You know what? I'll do the same."
But . . . but according to staples, The Conna is a sure fire Selke winner with his massively improved two way pay which if I might add is considered elite by some, and by elite I mean Staples and Stouffer.
Staples - "The Conna is elite defensively its the best part of his game now"
Stouffer - "Yup"
Staples - "Yup"

They are the hockey writers version of the confirmation bias.
Listening to the Lightning game on radio yesterday was revealing. That lunatic Mishkin or whatever his name is and Phil Esposito were all over the Lightning for sloppy breakouts and missed passes.
They beat Dallas 5-0.
They obviously have a higher standard that they hold the team to there.
Esposito is a Hall of Famer who founded the franchise so he can just about say whatever he wants about the team.
The organization is probably also comfortable being held to a higher standard.
Edmonton is not and Calgary thinks it’s media is decent because it compares and contrasts itself to the most embarrassing delusionally insane homers in the entire league.
i loved hearing all game how Nurse has.really evolved in Klefboms absence, yeah he looked great out there getting exposed on most if not all the goals.
It did look like it. It makes me question his mental and emotional maturity. I actually feel sorry for the guy. and I don't say that lightly, I hate all things oilers.
You know what the Oilers could use right now, Lucic. Instead they have Neal, suckers!
As for Smith, it was only a matter of time until he turned back into a pumpkin. Their orange uniforms are really appropriate.
