That’s a completely different argument than your initial post and I agree with what you’re saying here.
You started off saying he wasn’t worth that and that he was a “pylon”. Both of which are wrong and untrue (IMO).

Nurse is the better player, but his contract is one of the worst in the league. Nobody would take him at 9+million per year. What is your opinion?

Zadorov at 5 by far. I really can't believe Nurse is better.

Zadorov is a funny player. Some nights he is lights out, but most nights you have to take the good with the bad. One thing that surprised me though is how fast he can be when he has a lot of room. He doesn't do it a lot, but when he jumps into the offense he actually looks good. You just rarely see him go for it.
I do hope we at least see Gudbranson back if Zadorov leaves.

To frame him as some 5-6 D man is super disingenuous. You watch him walk and try to backfill with some rookie or crappy journeyman UFA like we always do who isn’t tough over what, $1mm raise per year? Anyway, whatever haha

To frame Zadorov as anything other than a bottom pairing dman is disingenuous.
Zadorov was actually 5th in ES ATOI:
Andersson 17:55
Hanifin: 17:33
Tanev: 17:13
Kylington: 16:57
Zadorov: 15:55
Gudbranson: 15:07
He was also 5th in PP ATOI with 0:11, 5th in PK ATOI with 0:46, and has most generous percentage of offensive zone starts @ 58%.
Zadorov's most frequent opposition on the ice were players the caliber of Tyler Motte, Juho Lammikko, Warren Foegele, Matthew Highmore, Yanni Gourde, Joonas Donskoi, Radek Faksa, etc. All decent players, but all middle-six players at best.
When Zadorov was matched up against a higher level of competition in the playoffs in Tanev's absence, he fell apart. Zadorov-Gudbranson was the worst performing pairing against McDavid and Draisaitl...even the Kylington-Stone pairing had better advanced stats against McDavid.
If Zadorov was a legitimate #4 dman, he wouldn't have needed to be so heavily sheltered during the regular season and he would have been able to carry the bottom pairing on his own, neither of which he did.
The only thing Zadorov adds to the Flames is toughness, but they can easily fill that void for less than $4.5M

Great post, I agree with everything here except that I don't see Z as being "tough". He's huge, and physical, but he avoids fighting (at least with worthy opponents) because he's simply not a good fighter. Gudbranson can actually go with the best of them, and if we are somehow getting rid of Lucic, I hope we re-sign EG, cuz we'll need him.

Nurse had these stats the last 4 years:
35pts in 71 games
36pts in 56 games
33pts in 71 games
41pts in 82 games
Nurse has the size and skating that Z has, plus the physicality. His offense is vastly superior, and unlike Z-he can actually fight. Nurse is very prone to some of the worst boneheaded plays, and he's not close to being worth his contract, but on the other hand-he's not heavily sheltered like Z is. Don't get me wrong, I strongly dislike Nurse.

That Nurse contract may just be the worst in the NHL starting next season.

At his salary, he should be 2 of the 5 Giordanos.

Yeah so like I said, Z is better. Take Mcdink away and you have another pylon.

Nurse is clearly the better defenseman but in a perfect world he's a 2nd pairing guy making about $6-6.5 million a season at the absolute most.

I don't think anyone but Calgary can do a 8 year deal with Johnny. If the Flames can get his name on a contract...they should keep him.
