Woman Banned From Cafe For Tipping 20%
https://www.burrardstreetjournal.com/?p=8612
Quote:
“These workers have to live, you know? Have you no decency?” the café owner wrote in a series of Facebook posts. “My staff earn an absolute pittance and it’s because of people like you.”
The mother, who was a frequent customer, also received written notice of the ban. Large CCTV photos of the woman have been added to the cafe’s front window with a warning that police will be called should the woman attempt to enter again.
On the day of the incident, staff were reportedly shocked as the woman skipped past the cafe’s standard 33%, 50%, 75% and 100% tip options to select her own tip option instead.
“I mean 20% might have been OK a few years ago but now, honestly anything less than 50% is a total slap in the face.”
The café owner has also set up a GoFundMe asking for donations with 20% of all proceeds going directly to any affected staff.
The owner was not in the café at the time of the incident but said he called from his villa in St. Tropez as soon as he heard to comfort his staff.
|
33% on the machine as a minimum? "Slap to the face"?! Setting up a GoFundMe for.... what?! Calling from his villa in St. Tropez to comfort his staff, from the trauma, I presume?!

Based on where tipping culture is headed, it seems like it could soon be real.

Went for dinner Friday to a nice and pricey steak house.
Our server broke a wine glass right away that hit my wife's foot, she then put our red wine bottle in a bucket of ice which we didn't notice right away so it got ice cold.
She didn't comp anything or get us a new bottle and then when our bill came it had someone else's desert added to it.
Tip options on the machine; 18%, 20%, 22%.
I had to go other and put 15% for all of the mistakes but it's crazy that 15% is now punishment level tipping.
This server honestly deserved no tip but you can't do that of course!

I'm probably an ####### but if I'm out and there are numerous issues that are the server's fault I won't feel bad tipping 10% or maybe less. I would not have been generous enough for 15% in that situation.

I always figure if they make zero effort at fixing a problem like that, they have already written off getting a good tip from the table, and your service suffers the rest of the meal because of it. So then I oblige their instinct.

I was at a cafe this morning with 3 options for tips, 18%, 30% and 50%. They don't even drop the food at your table, just heat it in a microwave and pour a coffee.
That's not getting an 18% tip from me, that's a 0.

Man, that's terrible. I understand that breaking the glass was obviously an accident, but that, and then the wine on ice is definitely worthy of the wine being comped and then free dessert. I'm guessing if you spoke to the manager something would have been done. Tell me it wasn't Elisa because I love the steaks there...

Sure you can. All wait staff in Canada get at least minimum wage, so it's not like you are subsidizing their $2-3/hr wage.

My wife and I started a habit of her generally picking up the bill when we go out for meals because of how we manage different bills on her cards and mine. Of course servers don't know this and I find young female servers quite obviously giving the lion's share of the attention to me during the meal, clearly expecting that the extra attention garnered to me will have a positive impact on their tip. It's structural sexism sadly internalized by many young women working in food services via tipping culture. Pretty awful.

Pay your staff a better wage is a good start, expecting the public to pay extra the problem. Always felt the restaurant industry was messed up, I used to pay 15% and have moved up to 20% but not going to pay higher than that. I only pay though if I'm served at a table.
