Birthday parties @ Shakey's Pizza at Westbrook Mall. They had the disco version of the Star Wars them in the juke box. Awesome. Everyone got a helium balloon and it was a given that you would release it in the parking lot after the party.
I owned this record - don't know what happened to it:
I remember many a Saturday going down to 8th Ave and playing that football "x's and o's" game with the four rollers for what seemed hours. Also "Rip Off" my other favourite game.
Then we'd eat at some fast food restaurant on 8th that had everything. Can't remember what it was called started with P I think.
What was the name of the game store on 8th? Go Fly A Kite (something like that)?
I remember when the CTV news used to be hosted by this short haired lady. Barbera something. Name escapes me. Used to see her at the strip mall by my house lots.
All you guys pining for the days when Calgary was "crime free" know that the murder rate in 1981 was more than triple what it was in 2009- you know that, right? There never were "good old days" in this city. The best days are now.

They were still the good old days. Kids could walk to elementary school alone and not worry about getting thrown in the back of a van.
You didn't see a single parent on halloween when you were trick-or-treating.

Oh they probably had to worrie just as much..things just weren't reported in the media as much as it is now..and i think people were alot more naive back then to the possibilties of dangers.
back then kids could walk around in a moving vehicle and not much was thought of it.
Considering they weren't actually filming a guy flying and they just placed him their with CGI I'd say yeah, they meant to get that shot. They could have filmed whatever they wanted and choose to use that.
What are you talking about? CGI? This is 1983. Chris Reeve was right there suspended by cables and a big crane on that street in front of the C-Train tracks.
St. Louis Hotel is gone. Movie is a goldmine for some 1983 downtown Calgary. I love the serendipity of the C-Train going by. I doubt it was planned.
Not only was Calgary more awesome back then theres a train every 25 seconds! at 1:20 in the video you can see one then at 1:45ish now thats what I call a transit system.

*Bertuzzied: do you remember what the crowd used to chant when the Great Ghama would come in the ring? God, Calgary has/had a ton of racist rednecks!
I was telling my wife about that the other day and her jaw dropped to the floor
I remember going to the old Pavillion in Grade six with my friend and his older brother (1 or 2 grades ahead of us). We took the bus (probably buses, I don't remember that far back) on a Friday night alone to go sit with a bunch of derelicts and then took the bus(es) home after midnight. Those were certainly different times
Does anyone remember way back when, at the start of a new season on TV there would be a special show a couple nights before that would show all the new cartoons that would be airing on Saturday mornings?

Yes. I loved that show every year.
