Calgary Flames All Time Roster - 13th Forward
So some details ...
1. Calgary players only
2. I'll look at games played, production and PPG to list options.
3. My cut off won't effect options as I'll go deeper than required
4. I'll label them by rank (3rd line LW) but don't select the player that matches that role the best, pick the best player.
Day to Day
We elect a position, say 2nd line RW, remove that name and do the 3rd line RW the next day.
I'll post a summary as we go along.
Calgary Flames All Time Roster
Gary Roberts - Joe Nieuwendyk - Jarome Iginla
Johnny Gaudreau - Doug Gilmour - Theo Fleury
Matthew Tkachuk - Sean Monahan - Lanny McDonald
Alex Tanguay - Joel Otto - Joe Mullen
13th Fwd - 14th Fwd
D1 - D2
D3 - D4
D5 - D6
D7
Miikka Kiprusoff
Mike Vernon

- Added the depth positions to the roster
- Included every player that got a vote for fourth line positions in the 13th forward poll
I went Loob.

I almost feel like there needs to be a Nilsson thread.
The guy was obviously dynamite, but yet he doesn't make the all time team or 13th forward as voted by fans. I've never watched him play, so the older fans need to educate the younglings.
Does it just boil down to short tenure?

I love me some Loob, but Kenta really deserves this honorable mention over him.

Never watched him either, but from everything I've read he was absolute magic with the puck and probably one of the best pure talents we've had on the team, but registered near a zero on the GAF meter.
So it makes sense that he's somewhat divisive.

not sure why but it makes me sad that Tim Hunter's name isn't standing for consideration

Had Martin Gelinas just got that puck up a bit to make it clear cut obvious...he'd get my vote here other forwards be damned. Oilers stink cleansed.
I went Loob, but it was close over Nilsson. But when in doubt tie goes to the guy who never played for the Oilers.

Have to go with Backlund as a youngling. Tenure for me factored hugely and how he has grown since being drafted. He hasn't put up the biggest numbers but his ability to shut down other teams top players and now chip in offensively.

I think people here don't understand how good Kent Nilsson was. Gretzky said Nilsson may have been the most skilled player he'd seen in his entire career.

Still believe Loob should have made it as the 4th RW, voting for him again hoping he will stick. Loob was incredible.

I think we can understand and still think that Hakan Loob, who had a longer career with the Flames, was a first team all star RW in a season where he became the only Swede to ever score 50 goals (and paced his rookie linemate to the same), was a key member of Flames teams that made the finals in 86 and won in 89 and in whom the same Wayne Gretzky said the reason the Flames took a step back post 89 was because they 'missed Loob' is just as deserving of a vote
they were both hella players

I would love to do this again where, rather than pick "the best player," we tried to actually create the best team. We'd get a lot of great discussion and a lot of different guys would end up on the roster. Guys like Hunter would make for great discussion and could have a chance of making it.

For the 13th forward/role player, I loved these 3:
Shean Donovan
Marcus Nilson
Chris Clark
Glue/character guys that overachieved on sheer effort.

I gave in to who would actually make the best 13th forward mentality - Lindholm seems the most versatile of the bunch, and I think/hope that when his story here is finished, he will be worthy of the top 12.

Jaromir Jagr would be the perfect 14th forward
