Here's an article on Desbiens. It also talks about the backup goalie battle, the captaincy and the Heat are no longer the youngest team in the AHL. They've gone from 23 to 23 years 10 months, so still pretty young.
-Laurent Brossoit makes 31 saves in a 6-1 Oil Kings trouncing of the Kootenay Ice. Max Reinhart had an assist on the lone Kootenay goal.
-Michael Ferland was -1 (and pointless) in a 4-3 Brandon loss against Spokane.
-Patrick Holland had 0 points (and was even) in a 2-1 Tri-City win over Prince Albert.
HIFK acquired a new winger (Janne Pesonen) so Granlund is now on the second line. In reference to Markus, coach still says that skill determines who plays, not age.
Markus' first goal in the league at 1:25. Number 11 in white. Almost gets into a shoving match with Jarkko Ruutu earlier, too, before Peltonen gets in the middle.
6 games with HIFK, 4 points (1+3), +5.

The Heat have voted Quintin Laing (the existing captain) as team captain.
Guillaume Desbiens and Joe Piskula were voted alternate captains.
Seems fair enough for me. The fact that they voted for Desbiens to be an assistant captain shows me that his leadership on the ice (i.e., his style of play) is something the guys respect - even though he's a new face to the team. Good for them.

Brossoit sure seems to be playing good right now.

Today's gonna be down-right DISGUSTING with prospect hockey:
-Abbotsford (everyone) plays Rockford in the AHL
-Utah (Dowling, Severyn, Armstrong) plays Idaho in the ECHL (Gwinnett also plays, but Ryley Grantham is injured)
-Edmonton (Brossoit) plays Regina, Kootenay (Reinhart, Leach) plays Lethbridge, Portland (Baertschi, Wotherspoon) plays Kamloops and Tri-City (Holland) plays Brandon (Ferland) in the WHL
-Boston College (Arnold, Gaudreau) plays Denver, Wisconsin (Ramage) plays Michigan State and Notre Dame (Larson) plays Ohio State in the NCAA
-HIFK (Granlund) plays KalPa in SM-Liiga
The Heat have signed F - Krys Kolanos to a PTO (Professional Try-out). Kolanos - who has played 136 games in the NHL - will wear #8.
I attended a hockey camp (The Fred Sloan Hockey Camp) when I was younger, (His son is Tyler Sloan) Krys showed up for at least one day (cant remember exactly) I have a signed Dallas Stars hat from him (He was probably part of the Coyotes organization at the time) No idea why I had a Stars hat, lol. My parents must of got it at some point even though they are Flames fans and ive been raised a Flame fan, haha.
Possibly, but I think it really speaks to the depth of the Heat this year. However, I find it more interesting that Martin is still with Heat while Negrin is down in Utah. Does that mean Martin outplayed Negrin during the Heat training camp? Probably.
One thing is for sure. When the Heat come down with the injury bug, there will be another really good player to take his place instead of signing some guy to a one-game contract like last season.
It is an interesting contrast between Darryl Sutter's AHL roster and Feaster's AHL roster.
Is it better to have a team full of 20-23 year old draftees and prospects - players with some shot at the NHL (even if it is a slim one),
or have a team with only your very best prospects, surrounded by AHL journeymen who likely never have a shot at the NHL, but will be good pro's for the young guys to emulate, and help the young guys learn to win.
