Default Don Larway Dart 1 RIP

It is with great sadness I would like to announce the passing of Don ( Dart) Larway. Don was born in Oak lake Manitoba and resided in Houston Texas until his passing on Thursday November 7th 2019 in Houston. Don's hockey life took him from the MJHL,WCHL to being drafted by the Boston Bruins 18th overall in 1974 and eventually playing with the Houston Aeros of the WHA. He immediately made his mark in the rebel league by scoring two goals in his first game as a rookie. This occurred during the first inter league game between the NHL's ( St Louis Blues) and WHA's (Houston Aeros) in a 5 to 4 win for Houston.
More recently Don's career had him run camera ( professional videographer) at the Astros - Nationals World Series games in Houston for Fox among other major events.
His friends and extended family in Houston are to have a memorial service to celebrate Don's life. Bring a story or picture to share as they remember Don and have a few laughs at his expense.
Remembrance and Celebration of the Life of Don "DART" Larway Thursday November 14th 2019 at 7 p.m. Kenneally's Irish Pub 2111 South Shepherd Drive Houston Texas 77019.

Don's funeral service is yet to be determined and will post when decided upon.

RIP DART

not a player I knew much about - although I believe I did have his hockey card- just took a minute to look him up. played Junior with Trottier and Tiger, and then in the WHA with the Howes in Houston and Gretzky and Messier in Indianapolis. I'm sure he had some stories!
Sounds like he will be well celebrated

I would like to thank you for sharing this. Not only did I learn about Don, but you also sparked a bit of a trip through Hockey DB for me.

Default Don Dart Larway RIP

OBITUARY
LARWAY, John Donald –
February 12, 1954 - November 8, 2019
The family of Don is deeply
saddened to announce his sudden
passing at the age of 65 in
Houston Texas.

Don was the second of seven children and
grew up in Oak Lake and took his schooling at
the Oakwood School. He left home at the
young age of 15 and started his hockey career
with the Dauphin Kings of the MJHL. He then
went on to the WCHL with the Winnipeg Jr.
Jets, Winnipeg Clubs and finished his junior
hockey with the Swift Current Broncos.
In the 1974 NHL draft he was selected in the
first round by the Boston Bruins but opted for
the Houston Areos of the upstart rival WHA
league. Playing with the Aeros, he was
fortunate to win a Championship with
teammate number 9 “Mr. Hockey”. After
Houston he played with the Indianapolis
Racers and again lucky to play with teammate
number 99 “The Great One”. After ending his
playing career in Europe he returned to his
adopted home of Houston were he went into
business owning a Sony store. Through record
and tape sales he met many great artists in the
music industry. For the last 25 years Don was
a respected Videographer covering all the
major sports teams in Houston including the
Rockets, Astros, Texans and the Dynamos.
Don was predeceased by his parents Ray
and Marg, and older brother Bruce. His is
survived by his siblings Scott (Maxine), Kevin
(Deb), Janice (James), Brett (Tara), Cathy
(Wade) and sister-in-law Helene. Nieces and
Nephews are; Neil, Marc, Brad (Meghan),
Ryley, Mckenzie, Lindsey (Chris), Randi (Ben),
Devin, Colin, Jessica (Max), Shawn, Jeremy,
Steven, Terron, and one great nephew, Finley.
There will be a private family burial at the
Oak Lake Cemetery on July 16, 2020 followed
by a Celebration of Life at the Oak Lake Legion
from 2-5. All are welcome. His great Houston
second family held a celebration previously in
November for “DART” as he was known as
from his playing days and from then on. The
Larway family that attended this special
gathering was overwhelmed by the large
turnout and very grateful to meet so many of
his friends and co-workers.
Those wishing may forward donations to the
Oak Lake and Area Foundation in Don’s name

Any questions, I will try to respond in a timely fashion.
Thank you from all the family.
