I think up to that point we were all accustomed to Jim Henson's less disturbing puppet creations.

ALL ABOARD!
The Secret of NIMH was my go-to for creepy children's movie. Labyrinth was good too. I don't think I've ever seen Return to Oz.

Lol. I don't remember myself being that creepy as a child, but those and the Dark Crystal were some of my favorite movies growing up. Although I did find Return to Oz genuinely scary...particularly the part where the queen tries to steel Dorothy's head and all the other disembodied heads start screaming...

This.
While I love the memory of The Dark Crystal the reality doesn't seem to hold up (but I'm super hopeful for the new one).
And any discussion like this has to include Watership Down

Ali Wong is going to be huge in a few years. She's a great comic. I haven't seen the movie yet but will check it out since she wrote and stars in it

I put that on for my son (7) thinking it was just a show about bunnies. It seemed a bit dark and sombre from the beginning so I read up on it... and then turned it off. Ain’t nobody got time for nightmares.

You'll bounce back, just like every kind of ball (except a football).
