Do you know who won that year?
Roberto Benigni, good choice

I'll disagree with that. Life Is Beautiful is a great movie and he really made it.

Agreed.
Two movies with similair themes presented to two different ways.

I don't know why, but Revolutionary Road always sticks with me. It always seems to make me pause and reflect on my life and what is bringing me happiness.

A few classics that come to mind:
The Seven Samurai
Blade Runner
Paths of Glory (Kubrick)
Dr. Strangelove
Carrie
Some less known ones:
When Trumpets Fade. A recent small budget WWII film. For some reason I really liked it. Would recommend.
Man Without a Past. A Finnish art house film by Aki Kaurismäki. (It's been pretty popular internationally.)
"Surprise round":
Inglourious Basterds. Tarantino is the master of turning violence into something interesting, and this film is clearly his masterpiece in that regard. It's a way more clever film than people give it credit for.

I don't know about Shawshank Redemptions. I do remember talking to a friend about God after that film, but it could have been "Hurricane" or "In the Name of The Father". Any movie where an innocent good man gets locked up for years and years and loses so much of their life in a hell hole of a prison - and those that were responsible for putting him there get away with it (well, the jail warden killed himself to avoid having to go to jail himself). The innocent suffering and the guilty benefiting from that suffering - that is the kind of thing that makes me question the existence of a good God.
But beyond that, I'm not sure what the moral was behind SR.
