Not entirely sure which films are Canadian but Goon and Tucker and Dale vs Evil were solid recent comedies.

Other than that the only other one I can think of are Ginger Snaps, Fubar and Trailer Park Boys. Does Eastern Promises count?

Canadian film gets a bad rap, and generally speaking we don't even show them in theatres in our own country. We have produced some great movies though. Sadly, I haven't watched many in the last 5 or 6 years as the system has become more political and inbred, and there is no minor league system for incubating filmmakers here. Most Canadians we know work in America, except for the Sarah Pollys and Cronenberg's of the world, and good for them.

My top 5 are in bold, where I would watch them again, and notables are in italics, where I would recommend them to others, the remainders I'm glad I watched once.

Leolo (beyond amazing, Jean-Claude Lauzon only made 3 movies and died in a plane crash)
Hard Core Logo (intense, transformed Hugh Dillon into an actor)
The Changling (fantastic brooding horror movie)
Heavy Metal (animation station)
Videodrome (Cronenberg)
Whale Music (musical genius over the edge)
Ginger Snaps (first sequel is good, too)
Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter (title says it all)
Tideland (love Gilliam, weird movie, filmed in Sask)
Bon Cop, Bad Cop (they showed this in a real live theatre!)
Eastern Promises (Cronenberg, again)
One Week (Canadian road story, I liked it better than Down the Road)
Pontypool (No budget, no problem)
Passchendaele (Excellent war flick)
Goon (one of the only new films on my 'to watch' list)

I apologize for hijacking the 'top 5' premise, but I was afraid that Canadian made movies wouldn't get their due, and these honestly deserve an audience. All great films to be watched at least once.

1. Cruising Bar aka Meet Market (by far the best).

This comedy is about four men and their separate journeys of trying to get laid during a night on the town in Montreal
The characters are:
1- an upper middle class metrosexual narcissist
2- a womanizing, overweight cheating husband
3- an immature, wild haired, wild eyed drug addict
4- possibly the shyest, wimpiest nerd ever committed to celluloid)

These four characters are all played BRILLIANTLY by actor Michel Cote, who disappears so MAGNIFICENTLY into each character, that I have never seen anything like it rivaled by any other actor, except perhaps Peter Sellers. If someone showed you the movie and you missed the opening credits, you would never know its the same guy playing them.

It makes Eddie Murphy and other guys who have tried to pull off multiple characters in one movie look embarrassing by comparison. He is that good.
(All due respect to a guy like Mike Myers for his brilliance in Austin Powers).

The movie itself is pretty silly and standard fare for the genre. It's these four distinct amazing characters and the amazing acting that make it a cult classic.

It is just as great dubbed as it is with subtitles. The only other movie I can think of off the top of my head that I would say that about is Riki Oh.

2. Porky's

I watched this on cable as a young buck and will always remember it fondly for all the nudity and silly teen hijinks.

3.Dance Me Outside

A comedy/drama about two best pals on the rez who find their friend murdered and plot to take revenge. After watching this and Hard Core Logo (also directed by Bruce Macdonald), I had immense respect for Hugh Dillon as an actor. He might even be a better actor than a singer!

He is so intense and memorable, that with very little screen time he almost manages to steal the show from the main characters Silas and Frank (Adam Beach is hilarious in this)

4. Pin

A haunting psychological horror about a sister, her mentally ill brother, and another member of the family; a very creepy, life sized, anatomically correct medical doll named "Pin". I love the ending to this one. It's actually kind of sad.

5. (tie)Tommy Tricker and the stamp traveller/ Peanut Butter solution

(mostly for weirdness and charm. They don't make kids movies like these anymore.)

That's the list. I hope people check some of my recommendations out, and hopefully you enjoy them.

Hmm, think all five could probably go to Cronenberg, but I always liked eXistenZ, The Fly, Cube (because of the concept), Pontypool, and Videodrome. I've also heard that A Christmas Story is technically a Canadian movie, so it would probably make my list as well. Same goes with Enemy I suppose, which I would consider to be a Canadian movie (filmed in Canada, by a Canadian director).

Then there's The Barbarian Invasions and Incendies I suppose, which I know everyone seems to love. I am pretty sure I have seen both of them, just like the others more.

Barbarian Invasions

C.R.A.Z.Y. is hilarious

Also any Atom Egoyam film but most specifically

Sweet Hereafter

Does 50 Dead Men Walking Count?

Figured I'd go with some that haven't been listed.

1) Waydowntown (a Calgary film, even - coworkers bet a month's paycheque on who can stay in the +15 the longest - dark comedy in the vein of Office Space)
2) Final Destination
3) It's All Gone Pete Tong
4) Meatballs
5) eXistenZ

HM: Screamers. Horribly campy B-horror movie based on a Phillikp K Dick movie that I really want to like but just cant.

-The Trotsky (Jay Baruchel)
-The Snow Walker (pretty sure it was a Canadian film)
-Goon
-FUBAR

I was hoping this would be our Saving Private Ryan. A chance to finally showcase Canadians in a major conflict. Instead we got the worst part of Pearl Harbour mixed with Paul Gross' Jesus complex.

I'm shocked Cube hasn't gotten a shout out yet.

Definitely one of the best Canadian flicks.

Edit: Ahh...someone did mention it - still a great movie though!

Cube is definitely one of my favorites. Although not nearly as good as Cube 2: Hypercube!

Black Robe (I read the Jesuit Diaries in university. This movie gets a lot right)

Fubar (As it stands Plan B is to just keep on Given'r.)

The Grand Seduction (a bit derivative of Waking Ned Devine)

The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz

Whale Music
(Rheostatics)

Porky's still makes me laugh. What constitutes a Canadian movie? Director? Where it has been filmed?

Good question - I saw A Christmas Story on a list of top Canadian movies, which doesn't make sense to me.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Christmas_Story

The school scenes were shot at Victoria School in St. Catharines, Ontario.

I went with produced/directed in Canada/by a Canadian. Filming locations are irrelevant, IMO. I wouldn't call Star Wars a Tunsinian movie...

There's a pretty good list on wikipedia of Canadian films through the years.

Roadkill is one of my favourites.

Also, Cube was pretty good.

To be fair I shouldn't have called it a war flick. It's more of a love story with a war background. (I'd have to say that Micheal Bay's idea of a love story is Armageddon, so I'd give the nod to Gross there.) I like the comment of Paul Gross's Jesus complex, though. Can't think of one movie or show where he wasn't Superman, but at least I'm prepared when I see one of his movies.

Thumbs up to those who mentioned Cube and Dance Me Outside.

Isn't that why we have the CRTC?
