Whats wrong with the skull? Kipper always had a skull theme and it looked great. I actually love it when players use the same theme for each of their masks - Belfour, Toskala, Kipper, Cujo, Turco. Heck even Brodeur kept his theme when he was in St.Louis.
Agreed with the backwards flaming C - that needs to end.

I usually don't like skulls on masks.
This one is very cool though

This is the first goalie mask I've seen in a long while that could become iconic.

I believe he's wearing it with the black uniforms this season, so we should see it in action after the road trip on the 29th against Florida.

It shouldn't, although with enough velocity it's possible that it could get wedged in there (in some cases, to the point of making contact with the goalie's face).
A stick blade could get though that opening (see the incident with Jonathan Quick, which got Matthew Tkachuk suspended for two games), but that is the risk that goalies take by wearing uncertified "cat eye" cages to get better sightlines.

The Athletic ranked the teams best goalie masks in the league.
Markstrom wins it finishing in first place.
https://theathletic.com/4086109/2023...ower-rankings/
Granger: Markstrom always seems to have great mask designs, and this one is his crème de la crème. I love everything about this haunting mask, but a less-obvious detail that really completes the look are the flame-painted elastic straps. If they were the usual white, cotton elastic straps, it would detract from the overall look. Colored orange and red, they blend right into the best mask in the NHL.
Gentille: That eye for detail is why you’re running the show. To me, this is the perfect blend of taking a classic design — something spooky with an open mouth over the actual mask — and modernizing/individualizing it.
Goldman: The design is excellent and so are the details. Calgary’s home, away, and alternates (Blasty, not that unfinished reverse retro) are some of the nicest in the league. And there’s so much potential for a goalie mask to match because it’s not the busiest of jerseys, and this just nails it.

The biggest question now is why does Markstrom wear his white gear with the 2 black jerseys? It looks terrible.

Maybe he's getting a new set of the black ones. Or they aren't as broken in as he would like and the white ones feel better.

Goaltenders are pretty superstitious. It could be something as simple as that.
