That's a long time to commit to a player who has played hardly any games for them.

Excellent signing. He's a terrific player and I think that money figure could end up looking like a bargain.

You don't give a guy $41M over 7 years after 17 games. A bridge deal would have made way more sense - even if it ends up costing you a little more overall, at least you have some certainty with it.

This is a gamble, but I think it'll end up working out in the Coyote's favor.

I get what you're saying, Enoch, but the Flames just gave Elias Lindholm $30 million over 6 years, sight unseen. Look how that's worked out.
The Coyotes have seen just how well Schmaltz worked with Keller. That was a hell of a combination. Plus, they probably had to pay a little more to convince him to stay in Arizona.

If you aren't getting a deal there no need to sign a guy for this long when you don't have to. Particularly when you are team who likely can't spend to the cap.

Very risky signing a guy to that much for that long after 1.5 good seasons.

Good deal. That’s a different team with Schmaltz in the lineup.

scored 50+ points last year and was on pace for similar this year
decent calculated risk
Lindholm's contract looks great now that he's having an 80 pt season; might have been an slight over payment had he stuck to the 40's like his past 4 seasons

Not totally sight unseen, as Peters has been his coach for 5 years now. And he has a longer track record of what he can do in the NHL. And it was less money, therefore less risk.
$40M after 17 games, for a guy with about a season and a half of good hockey behind him, is an unnecessary gamble.
And if you have to 'pay up' for a player, that is reason NOT to go 7 years.

I think the Yotes did really well here. Young guy, they are desperate for front line players and the term is excellent for them barring injuries. In 4 years even if he tops out at 50-60 points a year will look like great value, I imagine most average second liners in the league will be making as much if not more.

The problem for the Yotes is that they are not playing with an $80M budget, they are playing with a $65M budget (think 5 years ago for most teams).
$5.85M per is 1st line money for them, they can't pay that for a 2nd liner that is putting up 45-50 points (which is what we can expect from him if he is on the 2nd line and not getting the PP1 time).
Right now, Schmaltz has been playing with Keller because of all their injuries but will he when they're healthy? He is not a 1st line player, he's a 2nd line player.

But when he is on the 2nd line, he too will be an average 2nd liner, and the Yotes are working on a smaller budget than everybody else. For the Yotes, it's 2015.

$5.85 sounds pretty good for a young 2nd line C to me. Even on their budget. They need to start winning eventually.

He hasn't been playing with anyone. He's been hurt for months. However, when Schmaltz, Galchenyuk, and Stepan were all in the lineup, Schmaltz was the 1C, Stepan was the 2C, and Galchenyuk was on the wing.

Seems like a lot of AAV to me, but maybe a deal in later years. It's a gamble, but could pay off.

Just because you're a budget team doesn't mean you get to ignore market pricing.
50 points get you 5+ million.
Being a budget team just means you can't afford as many of those contracts.
