Monahan: "Losing sucks and I'm frustrated with my play"
Quote:
"It’s a long season – you go through ups and downs and right now I’ve got to get out of this and turn this around quick," said Monahan, 24, who missed two games recently because "something didn’t feel quite right."
"You’ve got to be strong. It’s an important time of the year so I’m trying to gear up and get ready for the playoffs and get my game as sharp as I can."
How does he do that?
"It’s just playing harder," said Monahan who long ago cracked the 30-goal mark for the third time in his six-year career.
"You can get a lot of looks in a game but you don’t count looks on the scoreboard."
"It’s frustrating (not scoring goals) but you’ve got to get used to it – that’s how games are going to be down the stretch and in the playoffs," said captain Mark Giordano of a tightening mindset the team has hammered home all month.
"Teams are going to tighten up. Tonight they were committed to putting pucks in and trying to defend. Special teams have to help us out – we have to be positive in special teams and we weren’t and that’s the difference."
If it was only a matter of not capitalizing. Since the All star break he has looked slow, weak on the puck and mostly shooting muffins.
Gotta be something more than just a slump.
He also mentioned the other day that he's lost some confidence (paraphrasing), so coupled with these quotes you can tell he's definitely feeling the stress of his slump.
Hopefully everything off the ice is OK and he can bust through this and go on a tear.
What kind of philistine listens to the single version?

If he was hurt I don't think Peters would put him on those final draws in last night's game. I think it's confidence and putting too much pressure on himself. The top line needs to go back to having a bit of fun and stop trying to be Atlas every night.

Yeah, I don't think he's injured. It's confidence or outside factors that are causing the slump.
It wouldn’t make sense if it was an injury. Bennett is sitting out even while healthy enough to play, why wouldn’t Monahan sit out too? This is the first time in over a decade this team has the kind of flexibility to allow players to sit and heal for the playoffs.
Although he did get hit by Blake Coleman vs New Jersey which took him out of the lineup for a couple games. Monahan really hasn’t been good for over 2 months now since the all star break.
Right now he just needs to play harder. His dump ins are cosmetic, his forecheck is completely lethargic, he’s never been quick so he needs to anticipate the play more rather than chase all the time and finally, guy needs to just bear down and bury the chances he’s getting.

If our worst fears are realized and the team gets eliminated in the first round it will be curious to see how Treliving handles the offseason. I'm sure for the past few months most of his work has centered around finding at least one goaltender but I wonder if after seeing the same players wilt as the hockey gets more difficult that he shakes things up once again or maybe he looks at the overall season and thinks they are close and crosses his fingers these guys can finish strong for once? If Monahan can't get out of this funk maybe time to shop him around for an equivalent center that may be more consistent and brings more to the table other than having good hands around the net?

Lol I was wondering when the trade Monahan whispers might start. Yup that’s what contenders do, trade their top line centre when there’s a rough patch. Top line centres grow on trees, I’m sure the Flames will simply find another one.

The issue with Mony is he is slightly one dimensional as a player.
At this stage of his career he isn't an elite defender, skater or hitter but he is undoubtably one of the games Elite finishers.
However, when he isn't finishing, it is difficult for him to find other ways to contribute positively.
He's like a striker in soccer, he can just disappear for 88 minutes and then, Boom, outta nowhere he scores the winning goal.
But when the games tighten up, a guy who is 6'2" 200lbs should certainly be able to throw his weight around and use his size advantage a bit more than he currently does.
