Driving up the Yankees isn’t the worse end state TBH
The bigger issue is whichever of the NY team misses on Soto will go hard at Burnes and others

I just cannot see Rogers corp allowing committing that amount of money on the books to shareholders for that number of years. I think some here are leaning towards a conspiracy that Rogers is using it for temp clicks, which is such small beans revenue wise. I’m sure they are kicking the tires but when it’s jumped so high it simply doesn’t make sense. I hope there’s no last minute change of heart.

They won't be changing their mind now that's it's topping $700MM if true.
Jays can't go that high within any reason. Yanks there to drive up the Mets, no way can they pay Soto that much more than Judge.
But Soto was unique in that he seemed to care most about money, which is why the Jays were in, and less so about the "moving to Canada" and everything else that the Jays are up against, perception wise. And they had Vlad who is friendly with Soto.
But some of the other top guys, who the Sox, Dodgers and Mets or Yankees will go after hard after they miss out on Soto, may well have some of those reservations about Canada, no matter how well the Jays treat players and their families.

I really don’t get where the bean counters see a ROI from Soto. For any team. For Ohtani it could be argued because of the Japanese heritage and fanbase, and a potential tv revenue steam from there. But Soto isn’t the same. For the record I don’t think any player is worth more than $35M at best. I just can’t fathom additional revenue and the ROI from signing these two guys. The casual fan really doesn’t know Soto, let alone buy his jersey, no matter how much Rogers promotes him.

Every person who buys Sportsnet + for the regular season is $150 bucks right into Rogers pockets . It is way more valuable then Rogers Snet cable for the Jays books
Add on seats sold , sponsorship , advertising etc and it’s easy to see how the number add up exponentially fast
It isn’t just getting Soto - it’s creating buzz and ultimately fielding a competitive team . When the Jays were winning playoff games with Bautista the entire country was watching
Dodgers have said the Ohtani revenue blew their expectations away this season - so it worked for them
Rogers needs to generate some excitement / hope . They have the opportunity when the team is exciting to rake in the coin. And Rogers needs something for people to watch / subscribe to all summer

I don’t disagree Jason, but where the Dodgers created that buzz was also because of the crazy stars on the team. If the Jays today added Soto and didn’t fill the numerous holes in the lineup, they’d get a three day buzz before people realized the anemic offensive capabilities. The start of every season there’s buzz. But it’d only be a matter of time before people would see holes. All I’m saying is adding a guy or two without a prospect base is a terrible idea. This team is not a Soto away from contending.

Technically Soto and his 8 WAR replacing our 0 WAR scrubs we threw out there last year would have had the Jays 3 games out of the playoffs
And that was with a historically bad bullpen - the worst bullpen WAR I believe in history (or was at one point during the season- worse then the white Sox
So Soto and an average bullpen and this is a playoff team / right there
And if Bo plays how he normally does there’s another 4 wins and it’s a 90 win team

What would be worse, missing playoffs with Ohtani and Trout, or Vladdy and Soto. Albeit Trouts injury didn't help.

If they for whatever reason, signed Soto, (my guess 0% chance)
Would they have any ability to fill the other holes?
My guess, they still miss the playoffs.
Difference is they would sell seats.

Apparently it's been reported that they are allowed a higher payroll with Soto. Not sure how much higher though.
Currently sitting at estimated $202 million including arb estimates. Add Soto at about $50 million and you are now above the first level of LT with $8 million to get to the 2nd level, $28 million to the 3rd level and $48 million to reach the highest level.

I'd wager that that tweet leak is from the Jays camp to show Soto there's a lot hinging on him. The whole situation pisses me off. Why can't they have contingent talks with the other camps? How much back and forth is going on with Team Soto that they're that busy with just him and ownership? They clearly haven't learned. If Soto's camp leaks to the Mets or Yanks or Sox that they're not in the running I'd guess those guys take the Jays' plan B, whomever that is. What a fn stupid approach by these idiots. Regardless I hope they don't splurge on Soto, but even more now so that their incompetence can be exposed further.

I don't think that's entirely the case. It's already been reported they've talked with Burnes.
Hopefully this whole thing doesn't drag for any longer than 24 hours so they can finally move on.

Yeah this is a nothing burger .
The other big FAs aren’t signing until Soto does so they can get offers from the teams that miss out
You really think any FA is going to say “well Jays you didn’t talk to us last week , we will not take your offer “

Lots of folks saying they think Soto will decide tonight.
Just hurry and pick the Mets so we can see if the Jays can accomplish anything else in FA
