And this is true for virtually every rural vs urban area in the country. It's actually crazy how many city folk, especially out east, have no idea this is how pretty much all of NA works. Cities lean liberal and rural areas are conservative. Doesn't matter what location they're in.
I've met so many people from Ontario who think all of the prairies is some backwoods Deliverance type area. Not realizing it's the same in their province outside of the cities.
My first reaction is to always ask them if they've ever left Toronto and visited ANY rural area in ON or QC. Because I can guarantee you every single small town in ON is way, way more conservative than Calgary or Edmonton or Regina or Winnipeg.
And it's the same in the US. Rural California, New York or Illinois are far bigger hicks than city folk in supposed hillbilly red states.
What sets apart areas that are stereotyped as backwards vs progressive is whether or not the urban centres are big enough to control the election results. In AB, we aren't quite urban enough to offset the heavily over represented rural areas. But in BC it is the opposite. Votes in the provincial election are nearly meaningless in many of the small rural areas because the population is concentrated in urban centres to the west.

I agree but it's also worth pointing out the stranglehold conservatives have on the city of Calgary which is unlike anything you'd see in BC or Ontario (though the Ford brothers seem to be wielding a similar playbook for Ontario).
They use the populist mythology of Alberta identity, oil and gas dollars, "common sense" issues and city folk who still see themselves as rural at heart in a way that you just can't discount as rural vs urban.

True. But I feel like Calgary is slowly shifting left.

^ Ya it's getting bigger which helps, and the cowboy culture of Albertan identity is starting to show cracks. But immigrants are also frequently targeted with this type of messaging and convinced to vote against their own interests (see Jason Kenney and NE Calgary). Growth alone isn't going to be enough to shift the tide.
Jared Wesley has done fascinating research on Alberta identity btw. Even if it doesn't represent the average Albertan anymore, cowboy culture is a strong and enduring image. https://www.cbc.ca/news/opinion/opin...ults-1.6221407
(Sort of related but the new Calgary branding efforts will be interesting. In the short term a new slogan won't change anything, but over the long term it will be interesting to see if there is any meaningful change in how Calgarians see themselves.)

Is Calgary shifting left or are conservative parties shifting right?

Good question. Maybe a bit of both. Shifting left due to lack of competent non-crazy centre-right options.

CPC and UCP are definitely more right than they used to be. Particularly in Alberta, the UCP has moved right with far more Wildrose influence than the former PC's. Even when Kenney came in that was a move to the right at the time.
I mean, if you want to ask former Alberta politicians:

Only once have I talked with someone in the US who recognized and knew where Calgary was. It was a Blues fan living in Central Missouri, so it was only because of hockey. He saw my Flames hat and came over to chat.

Just putting this out there, as, hey, there may be the odd one or two in this thread with interest in this request? Not sure though.

All I want for Christmas is the drama of the UCP calling for a leadership review.

Wooooooooow, she really doesn't want to win that election next year, eh? Not that "enshrining being unvaxxed as a human right" isn't pants-on-head stupid in the first place, but this'll be seen as an incredibly two-faced betrayal in the eyes of the antivaxxers. The antivaxxers were the only reliable voter base she had!

She can afford to lose them.
This is a direct play at the orphan voter block. Her goal is to do just enough for the Orphans to say she just said all of that stuff on her radio show for ratings and her leadership campaign she said what she had to to get elected but now she is heading back toward the middle where I’m comfortable.
