Calgary needs and will build a new arena eventually...Flames or no Flames
It would be pretty sad to lose the team and then within a decade tax payers fund a new "events center" for concerts and semi-pro sports.
I am not saying give them everything they want but I think King and Nenshi need to go...get some fresh faces on it

My job is more important to me than sports - but I don't expect the city to pitch in to help my company build a new building.

Yes, every city needs a 20,000 person arena if they don't have a hockey team. Are you insane?

Why not? Are there not government grants and funding to look into?

The Prime Minister is only one vote in the House of Commons as well. But he undeniably sets the agenda and tone of how the government operates.

Are you? What city this size doesn't have a large stadium for such events?
Stampede gonna stop booking top acts when the dome collapses or because its too expensive to maintain

Exactly. Calgary and the Flames are not intrinsic to one another.
But then let's not throw rocks at team ownership for moving on to a public who does value an NHL franchise.

Let an ongoing lottery (10 years?)pay for as much as possible. Can't it be that simple?

They've done the studies and show that, but I suspect you'd spend the money somewhere. Perhaps you'd order a pizza at home or you'd spend more on groceries, etc. It is possible you could save the money - but most likely you're going to spend it doing something.

That's completely different.
PM's the leader of a party and party votes will follow PM agenda for most part.
city Councillors are completely different, i think of them more like US congressman, make side deals for votes down the road on their wants within their ward

Not that there is any logic to it, but I suspect this might be settled with some Provincial/Federal money. Still taxpayer, but call it "infrastructure" money and spread the pain, it usually gets more traction.

Flames looking for 33% of cost from the city. City has offered ~11-12%

Except council isn't formed by political parties. The PM holds disproportionate power because MP's are compelled to follow direction.
Councillors have no such affiliation and are a band of individuals.
Nenshi does have more public attention and has the strongest way to communicate his message. However if he wants no arena and all the councilors do there is nothing he can do to whip them in line.
He's being used as the image of the anti-arena sentiment fair or unfair because of his elevated visibility.

for $200 you can sit down watch your team play, spend $20 on a couple beers another $10 for a burger.
The cap has risen about $30 million since 05-06, pretty disproportionate to the rest of the working force. If the flames/ Bettman think they deserve to only put in $200 million in to their dream billion+ dollar project then maybe they need to look in the mirror.
Good luck finding as many die hard fans in another empty market. I'd rather see them go than see another money hungry team(company) strong arm a government because they aren't rushing to empty their coffers for them. I believe they deserve some money, maybe even $300 million for an arena along with a field house/football stadium. But the way King and the flames act is pathetic, childish and greedy.
Btw is Francis an idiot or what. listening to him it's amazing how little he knows about issues on anything other then the flames, And he doesn't really have too great of an understanding of hockey either.
