Default New Car Deals

I'm looking to get a new vehicle and it pains me to death that I'm financing at 7.5% bank rates.

Looking to find out from people who have bought new this year:

What % off MSRP we're you able to get?
Does an Excellent credit rating help? ie they offer lower then the bank % to get the deal.

Also I'm not brand loyal, Looking for a mid-size truck. Frontier, Canyon/Colorado, Ridgeline, Tacoma or Gladiator if someone has a lead on a great deal.

A deal? Good luck, new and used cars are selling at a premium.

Yep, my 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe’s engine totally packed in last week so we are unexpectedly in the market for a new vehicle. It’s certainly not cheap out there. Need to get something that’s in stock and there’s not much inventory out there either.

New and used are selling at a premium, interest rates are sky-high, and heaven help you if you're looking at specialty vehicles / retailers. I had one quote me at 9.74%... then add a $140/month admin fee making the effective interest rate 23.5%. I politely declined, I'm paying cash for this sh-t.

We're in the market for a new vehicle and pretty much been told that if we have a trade-in and are financing we have a chance in the next 12 months, otherwise the wait is unknown. People with trade-ins available will jump the people without them as the dealerships need used inventory to turn around and sell.

There's deals out there, but depends what you want. Just got around 5% off MSRP on a new bmw a couple of months ago, but I had to choose from what was available in Calgary inventory. I think I could have done better, but I'm getting soft in old age.

If you are looking for a toyota hybrid forget about it - it's MSRP at least plus a months long wait.

For canyon/colorado, spec out what you want on car cost canada, and shop around some dealers in Southern Alberta (including Calgary). You should be able to get a discount - aim for 3% or so above invoice and see what comes back after pinging a few dealers.

Tacoma might be tough to get a discount right now, but new model coming out soon might mean you can score a deal on last year's model in inventory. Gert invoice price from ccc and start from there.

No idea about Gladiator, but I second the thought to ping Chad who has a sub forum here.

Happy shopping - I love new cars!

Why, I'll bet Chad can save you enough money that you can splurge on a Gem by Carati!

2015!? How many kms?

I'd consider repairing/replacing the engine on a vehicle of that age of the rest of it is in good shape. Even if it's $10k, if you can't find anything comparable for that price you'll still come out ahead. Hell even just to have a car for 2 years while you wait for new car prices to stabilize it might make sense.

165,000km. Was serviced absolutely by the book. Apparently what happened is a common problem - my shop said they had the exact same issue a few weeks previously - and a google search uncovered lots of similar complaints around that mileage range. Probably $6-$7k to repair and would be in shop for a month.

We had actually been thinking about a new car and then to use this as a second car - but had been holding off - so my plan now is actually to keep and repair it when we have the cash. But we do need a vehicle now - we live out in the boonies and work in calgary. It already cost me $400 to rent for 2.5 days and luckily our neighbours are letting us use their second car until we get a new one. Extremely kind of them.

It might actually have a free replacement from Hyundai...I forget the details in Canada but you should look into it.

@soreshins

I wish I had more details but a coworker of mine had her 2015 Kia Optima’s engine die on her a couple of weeks back.

After a day or two of back and forth they have decided to replace her engine at no cost.

Sounds like what powderjunkie has mentioned.

Yeah I wouldn't let this go, a friend of mines daughter bought a used Kia privately and the engine died a year later with 130k on it, after a few phone calls she ended up getting a new engine replaced at no cost, they even paid the tow charge.

It was part of a lawsuit, some engines have a lifetime warrantee. here's the details

It wouldn't hurt to try

Can confirm. Know someone with a 2015 or 2016 Santa Fe and dealer paid to replace engine. Don’t know all the details but it’s a known issue they covered. The dealer then promptly bought it back from them for a good price.

Sorry that’s OT. Good luck with search OP. I’ve seen some prices on used cars today that are the same price for year/make/model as cars I was looking at like 5 years ago. It’s crazy how much prices have spiked and how used cars are holding or gone up in value.

And as someone mentioned, if you want new you might have better luck if you stick to current inventory. If you need to special order, it’ll be a long ass wait.

There aren't a lot of good deals these days but you can get something like a 2023 Ford Escape discounted and I think they are offering 1.99% financing for 60 months which is about as good as you will find today from anyone.

I'd pay triple that interest rate to not drive an Escape.
