He didn't exactly take a 80 foot skate up at full speed and blast away with no one around him. It was a wobbly puck to boot.

Yeah not overly notable speed. Sportsnet had a nice slow motion video of the shot, it was actually on edge when Gio made contact with it. It seemed to handcuff Hill as it was a bit of a knuckler.

It was a puck coming off the side wall and his release on it was unreal.
That thing was a rocket.

ok, an 85mph knuckle puck is far more impressive. Russ Tyler would be proud.

Yeah definitely not a bomb. Pretty impressive in the sense that he didn't step into it at all but the placement on the shot was impressive.

I really don't understand how he is NOT an all star. It's baffling.

Agreed, 100%. However, looking at it...does it really matter? I'd personally rather have him rest for a bit, spend time with his family(As I believe he said he will be doing.)
Everyone who is a Flames fan in this city knows he is an All-Star, and to me that's all that really matters.

deservedly first star of the week
though he didn't get the "Last Man In", I have no doubt the informed hockey people know that he is definitely in the Norris winner category

I said in the Norris thread - all the publicity he's getting for not being picked might actually help him in the Norris voting. All the non-Edmonton/SJ media are saying he deserves to be there, so now his name is front and centre.

All Star game is about catering to a specific market and to the NHL sponsors. They want young, flashy players and local players. It makes sense that two SJ d-men were picked over him, especially Burns with his huge personality.
Gio doesn't fit the bill and that is more than OK. I wouldn't worry about it guys.
Getting an all-star nod at the end of the season is true recognition of ones performance for the season.

not "worried" about it but it shows how little respect the Flames get
2nd in scoring, 2nd overall, matching forwards scoring records not seen since the 90s, ridiculous goal differential, owning the plus/minus standings
1 guy at the all star game

People put too much stock in the All Star Game. Get over it already

He's passed Rielly in scoring now and is near untouchable on the plus minus front so you'd have to consider him close if not the front runner for the Norris now. Hopefully he passes burns who has a few more assists to really drive it home.

A) fan vote
B) game in SJ so extra Pacific spot automatically granted to sharks.
nothing there to be ticked over. Gio is probably stoked to rest, and a Norris would look so much better at the end of the season.

FWIW I think Gio's shot traveled a lot farther than the shots in the Skills comp. Plus, of course, not skating into it, he elevated (which lowers speed), plus has to time the one timer.

I don't think it's so much about 'putting stock' in the All Star game. It's more about gaining the due respect and recognition.
Gio deserves it.
