When someone says "finalist" as it relates to an NHL award its clear what they mean. The NHL knows the highest vote-getter already but to the public there are 3 finalists until the actual winner is announced.
Yes, I know what the NHL calls it. I think it's a misnomer. I'm part of the public and I don't think they are finalists. I think they are a winner and two runners up and they just haven't announced it yet. It would actually be more interesting if there was a nomination process and a final vote (eg Academy awards).

Being in the conversation means being in the top 5. And is absolutely trending towards that.

Let's not jinx it and let the kids play. That Zary/Kadri/Pospisil is great! All 3 are doing what the Flames need going forward! Have to give Kudos to Kadri for what he's providing for those 2 young players.

Yup. This is the NHL being stupid with language… which is a regularly scheduled event. Remember the ROR kerfuffle? That happened because the NHL didn't understand the language in their own CBA.

Oh, they’re not being stupid, just trying to introduce drama via pretending there’s some sort of contest.

Hell, the way they count votes, the second runner up may have been the 4th choice of the majority of voters.

It's not only a question of whether he wins the Calder Trophy, but how many.

But they openly admit there is no such contest. Everybody knows the voting is concluded and they are only withholding the results. Therefore, the only way they can try to create this impression is by misusing words.

Anyway, I think there's plenty of other evidence to convict the NHL of being stupid. In a case like this, it kind of becomes the default hypothesis.

I think he could easily be the runner up if he keeps this up.

I've always liked him as a prospect and even found myself defending him when some had lost faith during his injury riddled season(s).

He's played 8 games, with a 21.4% shooting percentage.

Near 70% offensive zone starts.

He's had a great start, and supplied much needed energy, but the small sample size is likely to bite us in the a$$.

Absolutely. But, when it is this early in the season, the same can be said for virtually every other rookie. None of them are just going to cruise to the finish, so I think it remains viable that Zary is a good candidate to remain in this conversation.

Assuming a rebuild especially. He's going to get minutes (so is Bedard).

I don't disagree that its likely unsustainable.

We can hope otherwise though!

The important things is he is getting meaningful minutes and is making the most of it right now.

I’m pretty happy to have had my reservations and doubts about Zary proven completely unfounded. He didn’t look good to me in the AHL, didn’t look like anything special. But he’s looked like 10x the player in the NHL.

If nothing else, Zary and Pospisil (like Pelletier and Coronato before them) are proving that we have talent in our pipeline that can fill out and contribute to an NHL roster. They might not be at the level of Bedard (even if one of them is producing better) but trusting the guys in our system is paying off and hopefully the Flames continue that in building the next interaction of this roster over the next couple of years.

Zary looked great in the AHL this year before the call up

So much this.

I got my shorts in a twist early on in the Prospect Rankings over the summer because the CP brain trust had Zary tumbling down the order in favor of new shiny toys.

I definitely didn't see this coming and neither did most of CP.

Yeah, 5 decent prospects who've shown well (counting Wolf) right now. There are some more unproven (Poirier, Honzek, Solovyov, Kuznetsov) and a few slightly older but who can contribute going forward (Sharangovitch, Duehr).

I mentioned before how bad I want to see a...

Pelletier Coronado Zary

...line, but a...

Pospisil Coronado Zary

...line could be interesting too.

(Not that I want to separate Kadri from that line. Maybe a...

Coronado Kadri Zary
Pospisil Andersson

...or...

Pospisil Coronado Zary
Kadri Andersson

...powerplay?)
